I Don't Think Many People Want Our OC Position (1 Viewer)

What doesn’t hold up to any historical scrutiny? You’re missing my point. Nobody is saying no-one wants the job, we’re saying it’s unattractive to candidates getting multiple interviews which is absolutely a fair assessment.

There’s a reason Pete Carmichael was still OC this season and it’s not because Allen or Loomis really wanted him to stay.
We legit might have to hire the 4th or 5th guy on our list. But people keep posting that "no one" wants the job. That's not the same as "we might lose out on some top candidates."

If we miss out on the top guys but end up hiring a good OC, that's okay. If we end up hiring the Steelers OC and he's bad, then that's not okay.

Just let the process play out.

If coaches are turning us down, then this is the reason why.

What aspiring coach would hypothetically go to a team that will have a coaching change in a year?

Off the top of my head, Ryan Nielsen. Went to ATL knowing Smith likely had one more year left. Now he is the DC in Jacksonville. Seemed to work pretty well for him.

Waldron is an example from this cycle, he signed on with a coach who is 10-24 well before most teams started signing OC’s.

This is just off the top of my head.

Carolina: has a history of firing coaches after one year. If Canales wins 4 or less, high likelihood he’s gone.

Tampa: saved his job with a late run and a division title. Miss the playoffs next year it’s likely he’s gone.

Chicago: needs to seriously improve or he’s gone. 9-8 might not be enough to save him.

Dallas: another late year or early playoff collapse and he could be gone.

Philly: same as Dallas

Arizona: looked way better late in the year but I wouldn’t bet on him being safe past next year (depending on record).

Giants: I would say another season of 6 wins and he’s gone.

Pitt: idk if they fire him but he could chose to retire.

Colts: gets a pass this year because Richardson was hurt but if they suck next year a change could be made.

Saints: my opinion is playoffs or he’s gone. Same as my opinion last year. But another 9-7 season and he will probably be back. It’s honestly 50-50 he’s here next year.

An OC’s job security does not drastically get worse by taking the Saints job compared to other teams. Slightly worse… sure. But not a huge difference. Candidates are going to pick their next job by where they think the players fit their scheme and how much control over the offense they will have.

We requested permission and also interviewed a handful of very talented and qualified guys including a bunch from the McVay/Shanahan coaching tree, but it doesn't seem like any of these guys want to come to come here. I think this is why we keep interviewing. It's not because we are doing our due diligence, it's because we keep getting turned down.
The Saints made it public that they were going to interview Kubiak and Griese, so it seems clear that they are waiting until after the conference championship games. It would actually be strange if they’d make a hire before then.

Would you want to work for DA?
If I was an OC? Hell yeah. He doesn’t meddle in the offense and lets me call plays. Also the Saints are extremely loyal. Rarely firing a coach ( HC, coordinators, or position coaches) after 1 year. And as everyone says, DA is a “beta” so I’ll run the offense as I see fit. No HC looking over my shoulder, trying to put game plans in place or take playing calling duties away. That’s an up coming OC’s dream. I’ll have full control of the offense to do what I want.

Out of all of the OC jobs, ours is on the lower side of desirability. The more desirable ones are likely to get filled with the best of the candidates before we fill ours unless we are willing to hire a 2nd tier candidate while the 1st tier are still out there. While I agree that many don't see us as the prime landing spot, I am not worried about the timing of any of this as it stands now.

Yeah, there’s no evidence this is true

Only 2 out of what, 16 spots have been filled thus far? Zac Robinson is holding everything up imo.

No idea. I'd have to actually meet him, talk to him, and talk to people who have and do work for him. How can any of us answer that when none of us actually know DA? But, it seems clear that lots of people don't have an issue working for DA.

Just because a guy isn't a good head coach doesn't mean he's not good to work for and just because a guy is a great head coach doesn't mean he's good to work for. Saban was an amazing head coach, but he was terrible to work for and I wouldn't want to work for him.
