If we release Carr what would you think of bringing back Jameis? [Mod edit] (34 Viewers)

He seems attractive because he's very cheap, he's a homey, and maybe the staff can help him. He might be willing to again be a backup.

Whatever happens, 5 years from now he and Cam Jordan are going to be awesome in football/entertainment media.

If and a big if we release Carr, I would assume we sign a vet QB. What would you all think about Jamies for the right price?
I can’t see Jameis wanting to backup Rattler which is what he’d be doing if it went that way.

But hey, he was 3rd string in Cleveland so maybe…

Jameis is a fun and likable guy but he’s no more of a winning piece than Carr is. If the idea is to find the QB who will elevate the team, he’s not the answer.

I'm sorry i just don't understand the Carr hate!! Tell me why do you think he's such a terrible QB? Yes , he's not Drew Brees but no one is! but we have no one close to his talent on the roster! Rattler? Rattler? please he may workout one day but not in the next two years. I had high hopes for Jake Haener but that didn't seem to work out either........Jameis Winston would be a step down from Carr!!!!!! I think we keep him around for the next two years and hopefully we'll draft someone at some point. But we have been successful at all drafting a qb in the last 10years.

If you get rid of Carr, you’re doing with the purpose of moving ahead with looking towards the future. Jameis is not the future, so it’s a no from me.

If you sign a veteran QB, it needs to be someone that you could sign for cheap and potentially get lucky and strike gold on to build around, someone in the Justin Fields realm.

A “veteran,” but still young and with pedigree that may have not been tapped into properly.

Jameis Winston:

• is 31 years old, entering season 11
• has a 36-51 career record as a starter (I do not believe wins are a QB stat, but enough people do to make it worth citing), high-water mark of 9-7
• has had one season earning over $20M, which was his fifth-year rookie deal option of $20.9M
• would expect to be paid like a starting NFL QB here if the guy he once backed up is released, so let go of those “he’ll be cheap!” $5M contract dreams y’all are having, it’s disrespectful at this point, loving a guy yet never wanting him to get paid is weird
• will not be benefitting from Sean Payton’s coaching
• in 2024: 61.1% completions rate, 2121 yards, 13/12 TD/INT, 6.22 AY/A, 80.6 rating, 55.6 QBR (every single Derek Carr 2024 stat is better)

I would keep our QB room the same and see what happens under CKM and Co. Especially with recent news of a higher salary cap. But that wasn’t the questioned in the thread title. So don’t take my comment as hating Carr. But I do think Jameis could be good in a mentor role if we don’t bring Carr back.

We haven't drafted a 1st round QB since 1971. The active longest streak in the NFL.

And we have too many “missing pieces” now to do so in this draft when you consider our current QB Room’s potential and that 1971 class. This year’s QB class isn’t close to last year’s or the 1971 class — Plunkett, Archie and Dante Pastorini were all significantly better potential-wise than Ward or Shedeur are now. If we were set at most other positions, then it might be worth the risk. But we’re simply nowhere close to that being the case. And blowing a Top 10 pick simply because you haven’t drafted a QB in the first round for more than 50 years (except the fact we did with Dave Wilson in the 1981 supplemental draft, costing us our No. 1 pick in 1982 — we drafted Lindsay Scott with a No. 1 pick — the Chargers’ pick we received as part of th e Wes Chandler trade. We also got the Chargers’ third-round pick in 1982 along with WR Aundra Thompson) makes no sense. The point still holds true for more than 40 years. You don’t do just because you haven’t for so long.

That said, I will stand behind Kellen Moore’s choice. But he’s too football intelligent to draft one in the Top 10 considering this year’s class. If he decides he does want a rookie to mold, Jaxson Dart or Will Howard in the third or even fourth round make more sense considering the current makeup of the Saints entire team.
