Opinion Isaiah Foskey will breakout in 2025 (11 Viewers)

As Saints fans we tend to over exaggerate our expectations of players knowing they may never produce. We also did that with Mason Tipton an A.T. Perry. Of course we want to see Foskey do well, but the Saints may have overreached for him just like they did with Payton Turner. It happens.

I'm down with the "clean slate" across the board. We have no idea what our new defensive scheme is going to be or what sort of players fit in it.
Maybe there's a role in it that fits Foskey? Maybe the new DC sees a way to put his skills to their best use? Foskey isn't a Cam, Grando, Turner, or
Young type. But that's how he's been used. Not that any of them set the world on fire recently on our defense. Granderson has been really good,
but that's about it.

Kind of hard for me to judge one particular player that never "developed" on a defensive line that has underachieved as a unit for the entire time he's
been in the league.

IMO I think he will have a break out season this year. He has the potential to be elite. I think he wasn't coached up correctly these past 2 seasons. According to Cam Jordan , Todd Grantham the DL coach wasn't teaching players technique in a interview he had. (Can't remember with who)That's vital to young players. We may already have one of our position of needs on the roster. As long as we get the right DC and DL coach. A player picked 40th is basically a 1st round talent. Just my opinion.

looking at situation thru black & gold glasses----

I’ll be happy if Foskey just becomes a solid rotational player. Right now he’s a marginal guy who could easily be replaced. Given that Young is probably gone, Cam may be released, Turner is a bust, Granderson and Kpasssgnon are good rotational players the Saints have a huge need at DE. If Foskey can just be good enough to give the starters a rest, provide fresh legs, and fill in in case of injury I’d be happy.

The fact that Baun got poached from us, and he’s what? The best defensive player in 2024? So Yea, i think its possible that the previous staff could be overlooking Foskey.

I think the one hope for Foskey is that if we hire Staley and start using the Fangio scheme, Foskey might be better as an OLB in a 3-4 or as a standup edge rusher in a hybrid 3-4. He was a stand up rusher at ND and that might help him at least get some production.
Would hate to let him go without trying him in the positions he has previously succeeded in. He had back-to-back college seasons with 11 sacks as a standup rusher.

I'm not going as far to say he could be elite, but I think he could be better in a 3-4 under a different coach. Baun is absolutely proof players can succeed in a different system/different coaches. The only thing Baun did on defense here was intercept a pass vs. HOU and immediately fumble it away. Even if Foskey doesn't reach Baun in PHI heights, if a switch to 3-4 that allows him to rush from a stand-up position makes him at least a competent player, that's a big upgrade from where we were at with him the last two seasons.

I think they tried to the stand up position already, didn't they? I could've sworn I read something about it last year.

I don't see Foskey getting cut. He's cheap on a rookie contract at a position of need. Our depth at DE would have to have a serious boost before he got cut. We are going to have to have him in the rotation by week 2 or 3 when Turner gets his annual season ending injury. I would love to see him play as a hybrid OLB/Stand up rusher if we have any looks like that in our new defense.

If any situation should get anything out of Foskey, it's a regime change in the coaching staff. And with Baun as a recent glaring example, I think there's reason to hope for Foskey. At the same time, he's got to show up and prove it was coaching. Make an impact on the field for once.

Turner is a free agent so I suspect he will have that injury for another team.

When I think of which players on the team would most benefit from a scheme change to 34, Foskey is the first player to come to mind. He could be the Baun we finally DIDN'T let get away. This guy was a 2nd round pick who has rarely been given a chance to do what he does well, stand up rush,

Round hole square peg. Allen's defense is great when he gets the exact pieces he needs, but if they are not an exact fit he's going to try his best to jam then into place (Alontae Tayler) or cast them aside as no good (Zach Baun). I really good have used any number of player examples, but these will suffice.

That's why I said if we get the right DC and DL coach. The talent is there. 11 sacks the last 2 seasons of his college career. Ran a 4.58 in the 40. I'm not saying it will happen but I can see it happening with the right coaching.
A player has it or he does not, a DL Coach is a positional coach and a DC is a architect of the defense, players have positions coaches going back to high-school (depending on the class).

There are always exceptions and I hope he turns the corner and that maybe like Kendre Miller he was being benched as an example to the vets that the coach had some control (DA) so he picked on the freshman because the seniors weren't having it.
