It’s time to cut ties with Mathieu (9 Viewers)

Didn't know that, Thanks.....idiotic move by the FO.....IMO

It wasn't really a two year extension and it was before this season. It was really a one year extension where they spread the money he would have made this year over two years. I think it's the same deal they did with Demario Davis. So it was a pay cut in exchange for an extra year. I don't think it stops them from cutting him if they want to.

But, based on what Underhill and Tripp are saying, the decision on if they keep older players like Cam and Mathieu will depend on what they do with Carr. They can cut Carr but they would have to keep/convert the salary of all the older players to signing bonuses. Or, they can keep Carr and convert his salary to signing bonuses which would allow them to cut older players.

In the end, I don't think any of these decisions should be made now. They should hire a new HC and then let him decide how he wants to build his team.

It's a shame, but I think unless he's willing to take a role player paycut, it doesn't make sense to keep him as he inexorably declines in the defensive backfield 40+ snaps a game.

Yeah we'd have two safety positions to fill -- but we already have two safety positions to fill. I rather a young safety have a year to gain experience next year than squeeze the last few drops out of a dead-end safety who will not be contributing to a super bowl team as a starter again in his career.

There's wanting a man gone.....

And then there's wanting a man gone 10 minutes before the clock strikes midnight for a new year.

Next level dedication from the OP that didn't go unnoticed by me.

He’s a liability on the field. That’s all that matters to me.

Haha stone cold

Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, and Tyran Mathieu are the respective veteran leaders at each level of the Saints defense. All three have a legitimate case as hall of fame players. All three are past their prime, too slow, and need to not be on the 2025 roster if the Saints are serious about a rebuild. We have to get younger, faster, and less expensive. Trading our best defensive player (Lattimore) was the price of other bad decisions. We let Trey Hendrickson, Zach Baun, David Onyemata, Alex Anzalone, Marcus Williams and Chauncy Gardner Johnson go. All are younger defensive starters on other teams. We failed on the defensive line in wasted draft picks on Marcus Davenport, Peyton Turner, and Isiah Foskey. This defense needs a reckoning. Cam, Demario, and Tyrann are not at fault. Loomis is the GM. Allen was the coach. The organization needs to make some hard decisions based on who we can draft. That starts at edge passrusher and both safety positions with the most likely to eek one more year in Davis.
Great take----need to swallow the dead money as much as possible on these players (Dont forget about RAM)- go young --most of the fan base will understand the process -----If Broncos can eat $60M in dead money on Wilson terrible contract & be on the cusp of playoffs--Saints can do it

Thanks Widge, that makes more sense at least.....at least for next year I have no problem keeping Carr....

I don’t think what he said was that bad. He’s probably right, too. However, is it really Saints-specific? Are lighter practices due to the agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA? I was under the impression players voted to lighten the workload of practices.
