Saints Janoris Jenkins and the defense (1 Viewer)

Yeah, when you keep getting beat the same way but the Jersey #'s change, it's not the players anymore, it's the scheme and the coaching staff.

It seems like the last few years, Allen did a great job of making adjustments and fixing things at halftime. This year, it seems they aren't adjusting at all.
Green Bay just kept running the same play with variations and we looked absolutely lost the entire time.

Is anybody else not sold on Anzalone?? He bites on every playaction and gets sucked up in the wash almost every time. I know he is more athletic and can cover better than AJ Klein but at least Klein was in position and wouldn't just get fooled so much. Anybody else watch Anzalone?? He seems lost.

Vaccaro ballin, Hicks ballin , Bell ballin. Everyone we get rid of starts ballin. Payton should have promoted Nolan to DC and fired Allen and Glenn last year. Its like the Bill Johnson Greg McMahon Joe Vitt thing again with Payton. He is too loyal to losers while real talent is out there waiting for an opportunity. Allen and Glenn are losers straight up. They are both coaches who need to be demoted or fired. Wasting talent every year while they keep on giving us a 22nd-30th ranked secondary. Like I heard someone say yesterday, Payton needs to nut up and clean house on the defensive side of the ball. Start with Glenn, then immediately follow that by actively going out for someone who is a motivator. We need a DC that will light his players up on the sidelines. Allen ain't it. Allen ain't it! Allen isn't going to help us reach a SB. Every chance he's had, he's blown it. Straight up.

Lets get the old gang back together...get on the phone with Greg Williams and poach him away next year...come back home and make this defense nasty again and lets watch all the collective executive heads in the NFL explode

At this point, I'd be down for that.

He is like Vitt, if Vitt were running the whole defense. And is it my imagination, or has Lattimore regressed since his first season. I used to say that there was a "vitt taint" and it took a year before it started to affect players. Now there seems to be a DA one a well

Greg Williams...really?! Boy does this forum have short memories. I guess you guys forgot about the forty weekly threads lamenting the all blitz all the time defense Greg often implemented. And how he refused to replace Jenkins, Harper or Shanle, because they were his boyz.

Our defense always looks like this at the beginning of the season. This is not new. Yes it’s frustrating, but it’s not some recent phenomena. If we had a middle of the pack defense paired with the offensive production we had last night and we win. I’m willing to wait and see how we look in the next two games. To me, that is when our real 2020 team reveals itself.

I also remember that pick 6 by Porter in the Super Bowl. That pick of Favre in the NFC Championship game. That de-cleater of Kurt Warner . . .

I thought JJ played relatively well over 3 games.
I wonder why DJ Swearinger and Prob were not used since week 1, maybe they can contribute.

breesgirl - you post some really insightful threads. I think you are spot-on especially on how our defense starts.

I suspect that many of us Who Dats are having a trigger set-off that we really don't want to touch mentally or emotionally, "Is this really the end of the Saints Golden years?" That's scary stuff. As long as SP is coach, through his will-power alone, will get the best out of this team. Is that 8-8? 14-2? We Saints fans want more SBs. I do think it's apparent that with Brees lost arm strength, this team cannot win the SB this year.

It's weird because Dennis Allen built his entire reputation on being a DB coach. He was the Secondary coach for us back when we won it all and his time with the Saints led to a head coaching job with the Raiders. So surely he knows a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes to Secondary play.

As for Aaron Glenn, I just don't see it. He spent two seasons as an assistant DB coach with the Browns and then was hired as the DB coach with the Saints. I know he was a good player but his coaching so far has been shaky. Easy to forget that this is only his 5th season as the head Defensive Backs Coach. This is what our passing defense has looked like since he joined:

'16 - 27th in yards, 31st in points

'17 - 18th in yards, 13th in points

'18 - 29th in yards, 23rd in points

'19 - 20th in yards, 21st in points

The PI was a terrible call (non-catchable)... I agree with that. One big play that Williams did allow was that deep post on 3rd down. Everybody wants to blame PJ Williams, but in quarters coverage if you're the deep safety you have to stay deep... you can't jump a shorter route and leave that deep route open. Its inexcusable. And that' not the first time he bit a short route and hung his fellow DB out to dry.
It depends on how Dennis Allen coaches it. He might tell them to come up and go back if they see the post. Either way Allen isn’t coaching well because the defense can’t play man coverage or zone coverage or recognize the same play three times on the same drive and ten times all game.
They could have called that ugly play action bootleg every play and still won! A good coordinator would have had his guys blast that for a sack fumble on the third try.

Janoris frequently has pretty good coverage, but he's been beat a couple times. the thing that is concerning to me is his habit of grabbing and holding the receiver's arm. he did it on that long PI to close out the game against the Raiders, and he did it again last night on that PI in the end zone. both times right in front of the ref.

it's bad technique, and if it hasn't been coached out of him, I would put that on Dennis Allen.

Yes Greg was very aggressive with his blitz calling but it was mainly a problem for many when he did it in the red zone. Everywhere else on the field it made his defense very opportunistic forcing fumbles, getting sacks, getting interceptions...and guess what - his defense was middle of the pack and we won the superbowl. If I'm not mistaken his defense was the quarterback slayers that year taking down all the greats...Manning, Warner, Farve, Brady
