Jeff Duncan: Inside the Saints Culture Issues (2 Viewers)

The things described in this article to me points to a leadership issue, not a player issue.

If this many players are disrespecting protocols in droves, then they’re not being led properly.

Don’t blame the players themselves for the lack of attention to detail/discipline. Attitude will always reflect leadership.

Who is telling them to do/not do these things? Are they being told not to do these things or face significant consequences? How is this message being delivered? Are the people delivering the messaging imposing/intimidating enough to get players to fall in line with their message?

These are the things that should be examined, not the individual players.

Remember two years ago when there was a report that came out that "Things seem less rigid now that SP is out of the building," and it was hailed as a good thing? I recall saying that "Rigid sure won us a lot of football games."

But sure, yes, blame the players.

My boss is not a good leader at all. I work hard because I am paid to work hard. I take personal responsibility for my work ethic and performance. Players should do the same.

I take it that Dennis Allen wasn’t holding Derek Carr accountable for poor play leading to rift between players. You can tell kamara wanted Jamie’s Winston to start over Carr when he was hurt. The only problem is that both our qb are cheeks. We don’t have a winning football coach and qb.

Can’t compare a typical workplace to an NFL locker room full of millionaire alphas that have been superstars viewed as gods at what they do their whole lives.

Personality types and personality traits are different and have different requirements in terms of leadership and discipline, and reactions to adversity.

Players parking if front of the 5 handicap spots, yeah those are the ones who need to be gone.

It's not on the coach when a player blatantly parks in a handicap spot. That's a choice.

Which is why we’re 9-8, 7-10. The difference between marginal teams and great ones are slim. The whole idea is that you have a leader who gets the best out of the most people possible. It’s a hard job and takes a lot of effort. It means spending time on people when you’d rather spend time on process. You’re aleays gonna have a certain number of self motivated individuals who require very little effort to get excellence out of them. It’s the others that you have to work on if you want to be more than middle of the pack.

I don't doubt that, I mean it's incredibly clear that Dennis Allen is mom and the Saints don't have a paternal influence next to DA. However, that doesn't mean you have to get rid of him...you just insert that type of influence, marry them together and it SHOULD in theory resolve the issue. That's why Gruden makes sense.

DA is who he is, but if you believe in him, which Loomis seems to, you find ways to complement him.

If that doesn't work....DA loses the job the same way he received it from Rob Ryan.

The article says the overwhelming majority of players stayed in line. A few dissenters emerged when things got tough. “Culture loss” during losing times happens to literally every team in the NFL, including the Sean Payton led Saints as described in the article.

I’d say that is a quality you obtained due to your upbringing and how you were raised. Unfortunately I don’t think that is the norm in the world anymore.
