It's over. He is not coming back. He left largely because he believed he could no longer contend for a championship with the Saints and he did not want to be part of a rebuilding project. If anything, the past five months have shown the team is even less competitive than he thought. And then there are the draft picks we traded to the Eagles. It's a mess, and he is not coming back.

So you have inside info as to why he left? Cool....because I think the reason is his new wife didn't want him working 16 hours a day their first year of marriage....my theory has just as much merit as yours....nobody knows but CSP and those he confides in.....

I'm all for him coming back and righting the ship....but it would be....surprising if he did to say the least....

To me this seems like wishcasting.

Why leave for one season and why would DA agree to be a fake HC for one year?

The only way this would make any sense is if Payton was in more trouble for the Dolphin thing and was facing another suspension and instead of all that drama he agreed to just step away for a year. But that still doesn’t answer as to why anyone would willingly be a HC placeholder

One thing to ponder, CSP has a huge ego as most great coaches do, perhaps he can't stand the fact that DA has, in the course of half a season, completely destroyed what he has built?

And he uses that motivation to prove he can do it again? (In Chris Farley's voice) That would be....awesome....

Honestly, if he wants to come back, I welcome him back with open arms.

If Dennis Allen were fired, is there a coaching candidate you'd want more than Payton?
