Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023 (3 Viewers)

FWIW, way back when this was news, I had a great chat with someone who covers the Saints (not Duncan) who said that SP just needed a break and really wanted to come back to NO. Apparently He and Loomis discussed several scenarios, one of which was for DA to be a one year interim. Ultimately, for SP it came down to not wanting to disrespect DA. At the time, the whole idea made no sense to me and still doesn't. But I was told that Sean and Micky are very close friends and had a great working relationship. You probably heard all this before but there may have been some truth to it.

I would absolutely hate to be coaching against Payton right now. If anything he seems like a better coach in Denver. A little older, a little wiser. But still the same guy who always had a couple of tricks up his sleeve

And discipline. Dumb pre-snap penalties and people out of position are things you don't see from Sean.

I always felt Payton was like Mora just with better talent. Both had teams that were very disciplined. They didn’t ever beat themselves. Ok maybe a double reverse here and there with Payton. They also got the best out of the players they had. Under Payton you didn’t see former saints player going and becoming great on other teams except one, but he couldn’t stay healthy despite numerous years.

Where it hurt both of them in a way was when it got to the playoffs. Payton was already getting everything out of his teams, and there wasn’t that little bit extra he could get out of them they couldn’t take it to the next level because that’s where his teams were already at. He did more with less at some positions than most coaches.

Mora on the other hand turned into a turtle. A defensive guy he was so scared of the offense making a mistake I swear Mora would’ve punted on first down so his offense wouldn’t turn the ball over. Zero risk taking

I always felt that CSP was the complete opposite of Mora, and I loved him for that reason.....he simply understood that you have to take chance to win big (playoff) games.....Mora never, ever understood this....and he never won a playoff game despite having some all time NFL great D's....

Nice post, totally agree
