Jim Mora didn’t like Rizzi chewing out Matthew Hayball (4 Viewers)

Two clowns don’t like what you had to say or how you said it. Y’all are really projecting your MACHO MAN sensibilities… on a message board. 0.0 yards per game tho 🥱
Me advocating to praising on the spot as well as chewing behinds out on the spot is toxic masculinity? I guess I am guilty, then. You would have been a great coach to a young Aaron Rodgers. Facilitate a cuture of wackiness and cancer. And then look stupid when he tears you and the team apart. Of course this ST player is not a QB1. No one is exempt from praise AND criticism. Sheesh.

Ok, I may be done with Rizzi even though I like him. Not because of the buttchewing, but because they have been choosing meh rookie punters the past two years with Neck Tattoo guy and now Hiball.

As for Coach Mora, I stopped listening to him when he dug in with his loyalty to Carl Smith over the clear needs of the team.

As already stated by myself and others, Hayball was supposed to be a safety net in case the returner got past those 10 players. But since he decided to join the scrum and play out of position, the returner got past him and everyone else.

A lot of you criticizing Rizzi would be calling for Hayball's head here and the GD thread had the flag not be thrown and the Saints lost.

Nobody is saying that Hayball didn't deserve to get chewed out or yelled at. It's a question of degree and how far he went. He went so far that AK had to pull him away from Hayball. IMO, that's a bad look for a guy who wants a multi-million dollar per year job as the face of your franchise.

And, the truth is that lots of other guys had to have not been doing their job in order for it to get the point where the punter has to make the tackle. Either that or it was a very poorly designed coverage and well all know Rizzi is a very good special teams coach so it likely was lots of mistakes by lots of guys, not poorly designed coverage or just because Hayball was too aggressive.

Beyond that, Shaheed muffed a punt earlier this year inside the 2 that did result in a Falcons TD and AK dropped an easy TD pass in the 2nd game against the Falcons. The Shaheed muff more or less cost us that game and the AK drop almost cost us the second Falcons game. Neither of those guys got the red faced and headset throwing treatment.

I guess with the snowflake era we are in now, Rizzi should have pulled him over, wrapped a arm over his shoulder, and said now Matthew, these punts aren't going where we designed. And you got caught up in the midst of all the players so you couldn't make a play on the returner. So what I need you to do next time is execute OK. Now, go get some gatorade and watch the film and try to do better. You're ok Matthew. You will be fine.
He got his butt chewed out. He will live.
😂
:potd:

There have been zero times where I would have blamed any punter for a kick return for a TD. They are kicking specialists that have backup linebackers, DBs and other actual football players in front of them that are supposed to stop the return. Most times I've seen punters try to tackle they get injured. Being the last line of defense does not make them responsible for those plays. They are the weakest of 22 players on the field during punts.

We gotta stop coddling these players

He'll be okay, he's grown and has played sports his whole career. I'm sure this ain't the first or last time he'll be chewed out.

I loved seeing it

I hated DA's approach of letting everything slide and making excuses, its good to see the HC holding players accountable.

The real test will be, the team will watch Rizzi to make sure he holds everyone to that same standard. No matter the player.

If he does, then there will be no issue

He isn't. AK dropped and easy TD pass against Atlanta that could have cost us the game, Sheed muffed a punt inside the 2 in the first Atalanta game, Grupe missed a 36 yard FG against the Rams. No red faced headset throwing. Not to mention the fact that the entire team played terrible against the Giants and only Hayball got that treatment.

I didn't like it. It didn't come across as "player's coach." It came across as a dude out of his depth.

Same with that cringe speech in the locker room. He's trying way too hard.

When you are bad and win games by 3 you can’t give up punt returns for TDs if there wasn’t a penalty we loose that game

Not sure what was wrong with the punt was it bad placement due to a punter going off script or just a bad kick

Bad kick happens kicking to wrong place can be not following the plan and did he earn him on the first punt that that’s not what they are wanting punt wise
I think Hayball also screwed up by running too far down field and got sucked into the wash as opposed to being the last line of defense.

I suggest reading TCUDan's response to this.....you may not agree but it makes perfect sense to me.....

I certainly respect Dan's opinion and it does explain why he would not blast Carr or Grupe, but it doesn't really explain why he would not blast AK, Shaheed, or the rest of the team.

Yep. I think this was akin to someone kicking the dog - despite all of the other sources of irritation in his life. #unimpressed
