Jon Stinchcomb to Saints fans: Adjust your expectations (1 Viewer)

Don't think that applies. The only actual loss right now looks to be Sanders. The defense looked ridiculous, and they did it without Demario Davis and Cam Jordan. Turner and Werner also sat out. The glaring issues were extremely subpar QB play, all three RBs having butterfingers, and the only WR to show up was Callaway. If Callaway shows out then that will make the Sanders loss negligible, leaving the only real change on the team being QB.
I agree with all 3 having subpar day at QB. Each had good plays and each had not so good plays. To me Jameis still looks the part more than Taysom. Book is a good long term prospect. I like him.

I have adjusted my expectations. I've been "expecting" another Super Bowl for the last eleven seasons. Now, I expect us to at least make the playoffs.

This team is still VERY talented, but there are some weak spots. Receiver is a concern to start the season, but Thomas should be back for most of the season. The linebacker position looks better than at any time in the last decade. We will find out about QB in the next few weeks. If we can get average play at that position, the team should be fine. Kamara needs to play in 17 games.

Sean payton needs someone that can go deep for his offense to be unstoppable

It’s wild when you think about it, any person that started watching NFL football after 2006 only knows the Saints as winners, and perennial title contenders. To those fans, the Saints have had a top 5 offense, and accurate quarterback play. Folks who started watching NFL football prior to that knew the Saints as nearly the opposite.

I do not carry this as a badge of honor, but having been a Saints fan I can honestly admit what Bain said in Batman is an accurate description of of most pre-2006 Saints, and how perhaps not being top shelf won’t kill us.

“You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding!”

New chapters can be exciting. I have not watched a preseason game this long in about 15 years
Thank you.

I didn’t hear what Stinchcomb said. But to me, any notion that we should strive for/expect anything less than a playoff spot and a run to the Super Bowl is stinkin’ thinkin’. And I guarantee you no one in that building has adjusted their expectations for the season.

Now, given the injuries, suspensions, etc., I wouldn’t go around shopping our 1st round pick to fill a hole. There’s a difference between striving to be the best and just being reckless.

But I expect this team to push for 10 wins. And as we saw last year with Tampa, just getting into the playoffs and hitting your stride at the right time is the most important thing.

Tonight a lot of people got the sharp reminder that being able to throw a football for 52389641287651 air yards means jack if it is to the wrong team.
Or over the head, or into the ground, in the GENERAL direction of the receiver.

The feeling I have, when it is a pass being put up with either Hill, or Winston, is there is about a 70% chance, nothing good is going to happen. That is the biggest difference I sense ATM, from no longer having Drew as QB. This is aside from the fact, so many other key players were lost and the known suspension of Onyemata and looming possible suspensions of Lattimore and Harris. Throw in the Thomas BS and we have a potential for an extremely bad start of a season. Combine all of what I mentioned, with the notorious bad starts of seasons with this staff and to me, anyone should be able to see why a winning season is in very tall order.

At the end of the day. It does (somewhat) make for like a Christmas morning. Lots of new toys. Some you like and some you never want to see again. 😂😂 We’ll see, what Santa has brought this year.

We may not have our HOF Quarterback, but we still have our HOF head coach.
You adjust your expectations, I’ll keep mine where they belong.
Exactly. And not just CSP but all the staff. Those of us old enough can remember being hopeful or even optimistic before CSP ever was on the radar. And with the exception of Jim Finks prime days and Muellers short stint, we never had a reason to be. Most of that time we didn’t have a single body in the building who would know talent if it sat in their lap. But we were hopeful because that’s what fans do.

we lost a legend but we still have one of the best staffs in the league. So there is all the reason in the world to be hopeful and just enjoy the process, enjoy the show.

First off it's hard to replace a HoF qb. My issue with Winston is typically, not all the time, but typically its hard to get out of throwing interceptions. Teams thought they could fix Jay Cutler. All the talent but couldn't be fixed. I'm afraid that's what we will see with Winston.

I like Taysom but just don't feel he is a starting qb in the NFL. He definitely has talent but just doesn't have that it factor to me at qb.

Ian Book. Saw some good things last night but who knows. Way too early.

I personally feel Winston and Taysom won't be on the team next year. Taysom at least not as a qb. I'm not sure what direction we will go but I don't see us contending for a while. But we will see. I will just sit back and watch and hope to be surprised.

They were talking specifically about losing Brees. The team's leader for the past 15 seasons.
Right, but losing the other talent is even more detrimental. Including a boatload of depth

If we still had a top two roster in the NFL a marginal QB could come in and win ten games. Our roster now is more towards the middle of the pack.

Not even remotely the same. Cutler went the way of Jeff George. Attitude. He never had the attitude for leadership. Winston has a great attitude, perhaps always had but certainly has had since he has been here.

Of course, Stinch is right that we can't expect to see the same high, consistent level of play out of the offense game in and game out without Brees. On the other hand, even with Drew we weren't getting to the big dance. I know, I know, we should have in 2018 if not for the horrible non-call, and we lost in a decent game to the eventual Super Bowl champs last year. Nevertheless, what I am getting at is that I don't think it's going to be like night and day watching the Brees-less Saints. In fact, I think our defense will continue the recent trend of getting better and will be extremely competitive this year. It looks like, rather to everybody's surprise, we could have our deepest and best front 7 ever under Payton. And if Adebo pans out, we'll be good in the secondary again. It's hardly inconceivable. The question is, of course, how good and how consistent the offense can be. There is a case for some optimism b/c it looks like this could be our best starting O line in some time, as I believe Ruiz is going to perform better in his second year with a full training camp under his belt, and McCoy is really coming into his own now. Our two tackles are among the best in the league. Peat remains something of a question mark but is above average in the run game. Mainly, he just needs to stay healthy. Secondly, Payton is not going to let the offense go into the tank. He's too good of an offensive mind not to come up with effective ways to utilize the talent we have. Albeit, we're thin at WR, especially until CGM gets back on the field, but we're stacked at RB and should be better at TE than last year. I'm not willing to assume this is going to be a down season at this point. I want to see how things develop on the field.

Disagree. We've lost different levels of talent over the past 15 seasons, but the main constant was the team's leader. The continuity there has been biggest impact over the seasons and the changeover there is what makes this team different. Do we ever talk about "what will the team be like without, Graham, Cooks, etc, etc.? Yes, but not to the level of "What will the team be like without it's leader for the last decade and a half?" There's losing talent and then there's losing the face of the franchise/team leader.

We’ve never once since Sean took over lost the collective talent that we lost this off season and it isn’t close. I’m factoring in injuries and the two suspensions likely coming too.

I’m not saying losing Drew wasn’t tough, but Drew was nothing more than a good QB at the end. If we keep all our other talent and get a decent QB we still win 10 games, that’s not really debatable when you have top two roster and Payton.

But when we lost all that other talent and Drew as well, we dropped to a middle of the pack roster, and trust me, we didn’t drop there because we lost Drew. He was a part of it of course
