Just saw on ESPN ticker...that Joe Schad reports that... (1 Viewer)

We have no business drafting a corner 10th anyway. Rookie corners rarely make an immediate impact. We need a defensive play maker at linebacker. I say get a corner or two in free agency and draft one in the second round.

There is a danger to this philosophy. I know you did say get a CB in round 2. But I have seen some who have suggested not drafting a CB in the first because of the idea that CBs rarely make an impact, which is not certainly true but so it goes. Anyway, you have to see a guy's career as being more important than only his rookie season. It is becoming increasingly difficult to get a top flight CB unless you draft one. As it appears now, Trufant and Asomugha will both be kept by their respective teams. That places pressure on us to get a guy like Samuel who is likely to have other suitors. You can't just go trying to sign FA cornerbacks. Eventually, you must draft. It's like a QB. Had Drew Brees not came free when he did--and you're not likely to see a situation like that again--then we would have had to eventually draft a signal caller to build the franchise around. But as teams better have a grasp of how to manage the cap, you are going to see less and less top flight players hit the market. So, let's not talk about adding an impact defensive player with our sights only set on his first season.

Getting Samuels wont do us much good if we dont also vastly improve the pressure upfront too. What I dont know is which defensive positional upgrade would provide that out of DT or Linebacker? Of course when it comes to pressure our DE's will have to decide to show up too. But to be fair to CG and WS, if I was trying to kill myself all game long trying to get to the QB, but everytime I turned around he was completing it to wide opened receivers, that might take a step out of me too!

It's all good. We still have a bunch of options at 10. One the the DTs might slip, we draft Ken Phillips, trade down get an extra pick and draft Dan Connor. It's not as bad as it seems.

So we will draft KP at 10, trade down somewhere gaining an extra pick and still draft Connors who is also listed to go in the lst round? Wouldnt we have to trade up in the 2nd for a chance at Connors? Of course its still too early to know who will rise and fall from now til then, but as of now I dont see how thats possible, but I wish it would work out that way. First 2 picks would have already covered a LB and S and FA would hopefully have covered CB.

It's still too early to speculate. After the Senior Bowl and combine, things will become clearer. Players will shoot up and down the board and projections will become more accurate.

I'd rather draft a guy on his overall performance than just what happens in an exhibition game and how he runs around in shorts.

Saw on ESPN that McFadden is declaring for the draft. This helps as he is definitely going to be chosen before we pick which slides down everyone one slot, better odds at getting that impact Def player.

I don't that this helps any or slides anyone down anymore than they arlready were since it was presumed that he would declare.

I want Keith Rivers, Dan Conner, Sed Ellis, or Kenny Phillips at #10... One of them WILL be there.

I'd be happy with Aqib Talib there also... I think he's a better cover CB than Jenkins anyways.
He's kind of slow from what I hear.

Saintuary, I have a postgraduate degree. I can tell you that I would not make the decision that Jenkins did to finish his bachelor's degree. He would never make the kind of money he can make as a #10 draft pick in the NFL with a bachelor's degree. What if he has a career ending injury in his senior year? Also, he is probably shortening his career by the year spent in school when he could have been on a team earning millions in the lost year. If I had the talent to play pro ball, would I give up my degrees? In a heartbeat. He can always go back to school when he is an "old man" in his thirties. Just my opinion.

GBO, while I understand your position and if it's true that he remain, obviously money is not the issue. Sometimes education wins out and IMO, he's to be congratulated.

Mualuga staying college is a bit of a disappointment for our drafting needs. I really think that kid is a beast. Fast and big. For all of you guys that are disappointed with Jenkins staying in, I am semi-happy since I think drafting a corner is about the LAST thing the Saints should do. Yes, his size would be a benifit, but I would MUCH rather have Samuel everyday of the week. He can't cost us much more than 10 mil for 08', so we would still have PLENTY of room under the cap, and PLENTY of loot to possibly get another big free agent. I'm not saying any names, but if we can get help on the lines in the draft, I wouldn't mind having a certain LB from the Bears too.

Samuel is a must though. Corners like that don't come available everyday, and we need help theree in the worst way. If NOTHING else, at least get Hall from Atlanta, and pick up Briggs and or a pass rushing DT.
