King: Saints Paid Price For Mare (1 Viewer)

If it can help the team then the price is of course a small one.

80% accuracy, with an improved kickoff, all in one kicker for a 6th round pick.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

The only issue is that no one knows how much a kicker is worth... If the Saints had decided that Carney was done, and that they needed a new kicker, what's the right path?

Apparently, they weren't too thrilled with anyone on the FA market...

I don't think you could assume that any kicker we'd pick in the 6th round would be a better move than going out and getting Mare... For all we know, the Saints had already decided that they would be taking a kicker with a later round pick! If you look at what's available, and Mare's better, and you can get him for the same pick you were planning to use, you go for it!! Rookie kickers can be dicey, even if they seem like they're can't-miss... see Russell Erxleben

The fact that he can kick off is a bit overrated, but leading the league in touchbacks is kind of a big deal...

No team should need 3 kicking specialists like we carried last year... Before Gowan got hurt, I know the plan was for him to kickoff... Weatherford doesn't kick off, but I'm not sure why we're so thrilled with him, seems like we could easily find a good punter who can kickoff, assuming Gowan is done... But Mare takes care of all of those problems, and he has a good track record as a kicker... Carney was no prize when San Diego let him go, but a reliable veteran with a strong leg will do fine in the Dome... I think it was a good move.

To me, it sonds like King's being slightly sarcastic to bring up Brady. He knows as well as anybody that if he looked at the last ten years, the only player picked there who made any impact on his squad is Brady. He then goes on to say how well he figures Mare to kick in the Dome. It sounds to me like he's saying the Saints made a pretty good trade, just with his usual dose of sarcasm (if the Saints skip the next Brady because of it, well, oops!) thrown in. Stop hunting for demons, guys. King actually thinks quite highly of the Saints front office.

It's true that it's hard to judge how much a kicker is worth (although clearly being able to do kickoffs makes them worth more), but how can you say that the first 199 people drafted this year will be worth more than Mare???

Ok then, he was worth the trade.

4. I think I'm not sure Olindo Mare will be worth a sixth-round pick

This is the only part that makes me say "huh...what?" It's almost like he was playing with both openings and forget to delete one.

That was my reaction also when I first read it.

Mare will be just fine in the Dome.

Don't fret. He wasn't that bad outside. Playing inside should help him tremendously.

I believe he was worth the sixth round pick.

Now Carney will have more time to play with his grandkids, and I do like Carney.

yup people here are really over reacting, not a tad, but WAAAYYY overboard.

Gotta love the offseason......5 pages of heated and aggressive debate about Peter King's comment on kicker and a 6th rounder.....can't wait for the draft!

I hope that O. Mare prove that he is worth more than the pick. I think the saints did the right move with 199 overall pick it might be too late to get a kicker that can start for you.

I disagree with King, but it all depends on how you value the draft. I was a little bothered by losing the pick at first until I realized we were probably going to have to pick a kicker there if we didn't have one that could be accurate and do good kickoffs by then. Mare was desired by several teams and we traded a pick we would have used for Medlock or Folk if they were still available. Instead we got Mare, who is a proven good kicker and kickoff guy. *shrug* I understand King's thinking, but I'm OK with the trade.
