King: Saints Paid Price For Mare (3 Viewers)

4. I think I'm not sure Olindo Mare will be worth a sixth-round pick

This is the only part that makes me say "huh...what?" It's almost like he was playing with both openings and forget to delete one.

No, that's his schtick, '10 Things I Think I Think'. I believe they all start with "I think". Nothing wrong with what he said IMO btw. I think we did sort of overpay but we also put Mare in a position to be successful in the Dome.

I don't see anything too wrong with his take. I do disagree that the 199th overall pick is somehow incredibly valuable because Tom Brady was selected there. I guess, under that line of logic, the 252nd pick is too much to give up because Colston was picked there. No biggie, just a slightly silly comment.
Also, don't forget that King is a Saint's season ticket holder, so he has as much right to question moves as any of us : )

On a side note:
I had an interesting interaction with King and Ed Werder from ESPN at the NFC championship game in Chicago. My buddy and I saw them talking at the Saints hotel while we were waiting for the team to arrive and decided to go up and say hello. Both of them couldn't have been nicer, and when I asked King what sort of chance he thought the Saints had, he replied, "I think you guys have a very good chance to not only beat the bears, but win the Super Bowl." My response was that I loved to hear that, and isn't it true that he is a season ticket holder. Werder got a huge kick out of that, and ribbed King by saying, "Yeah, what's this you guys stuff, season ticket holder?"

Not really relevant to anything, but I thought it was pretty amusing.

No problems with what King said. I also have no problem sending a sixth round pick for a proven kicker who has led the league in touchbacks. He is a sure footed kicker and brings more youth to the position. It was time for an upgrade.

If Mare can get lots of touchbacks, he will pay off big dividends. Not many kickers today can consistently get touchbacks. We will also have a much better kicker beyond fifty yards out as well. I would not have gotten rid of Carney for too many other kickers, but Mare was well worth the risk.

King stinks. The only good info in there is about coffee. I could care less what the score of his daughter's high school game was. He is a perfect example of what is wrong with journalism today. I do not even read them anymore. I would love to use the power of this and other football boards to bombard his editor's with negative feedback and take him out of the spotlight. But I do not have the time or really care that much.

TCUDan posts are 100 times better then his.

I'm not a big King fan and sixth-round picks are hit and miss. But why trade for a kicker? Mare had a bad year last year, which is why he was expendable. And he's a kicker. You shouldn't ever give up anything to sign kickers and punters, unless you're acquiring someone like Adam Vinatieri in his prime. Otherwise, you pick them up as free agents.

I disagree. He led the league in touchbacks. Please read the post I started on Avg. starting field position for more.

We had way too many teams starting their drives from the 40 or better after our kickoffs.

Mare will have 10 dome games. He missed 10 field goals sure--- but 5 were longer than 50 yard attempts. He finished strong with 9 straight.

Whether or not you can draft that I dunno... but kickoffs are a big part of defense. It's tough to do much when the opponent keeps starting their drives off around the mid-field mark.

I don't really have any issue with what King wrote, and like someone else wrote, the "Tom Brady with pick 199" was mainly for shock value. Of course, over the past 7 years, there have been some not-so-future-Hall-of-Famers at 199 also:

Khari Long (2005)
Clarence Moore (2004)
Willie Ponder (2003)
Adam Haayer (2001)
Antico Dalton (1999)

OK. Brady was one 6th round pick who worked out. Just think of all those other 6th round picks that are selling insurance or coaching high school football.

Don't recognize any. I wonder what our defense will be like if we lead the league in TB's?

King is a good writer whose east coast bias gets the best of him at times. Mare was a great addition...you can never be good enough on special teams.

We gave up a 6th to pick up a kicker who happens to be one of the best kickoff guys in the league. This will allow us to have one kicker rather than two, and allow us to carry a special teams ace like a Fred McAfee type player, or a 3rd string QB, or an additional FB.

Low cost, solid payoff IMO. The only way this looks bad is if Mare isn't accurate this upcoming season.
