Kurt Warner: Did Rattler even have a chance against the Chargers? (11 Viewers)

You're not likely to win when you lose half your established players, but it's also an opportunity to play the young guys.

Lots of very young teams challenge for the playoffs every year, and stars are born. It really irks me when coaches play mediocre players because they are afraid to give young players a chance to play. I sends a clear message of "no confidence" to the youngsters.
What young players are the Saints not playing?

I'm fairly certain I saw stats that showed they blitzed Haener more than Rattler.
Maybe so, i havent seen any stats either way. But to my eyes it looked like Haener had more time and the receivers had more room to work. Maybe he was getting the ball out sooner, but it didnt seem that way to me.

Sad Fact... I havent rewatched any games since the eagles. I normally rewatch at least once later in the week. Lately, once is enough because there's too many reasons we stink to go watch and start trying to pinpoint issues.

I think it looked that way because Haener was so much more decisive and got the ball out faster. Rattler is mobile and relies on his feet more than his anticipation.

Warner may need to watch the tape again. Rattler didn't get much help again this past Sunday against the Chargers with blocking, but he was high and low with fastballs when better ball placement and touch would have given receivers a better chance. Bailing out early and throwing the ball away instantly instead of at least scanning the field 1st. Stepping into sacks. Not seeing open receivers at different levels. No anticipation. We've all seen this through three straight games.

He's had his moments where he's flashed but more often than not, he's looked like the game is moving way too fast for him as should be expected from a Rookie.

All the hype about his ability to use his feet and make off platform throws hasn't translated to the NFL. He can pick up some yards running but in general he's too slow and way to small to be a threat in the run game. Bailing out early and not seeing the field means he's not making the on platform throws and not staying long enough for the plays to develop. And when he bails, he almost always runs to his right, and limits himself to one third of the field and hasn't shown to do much there either. For all the chatter about the strong arm, he's late on his throws and has to zip it into tight coverage leaving the receiver at risk for a big hit and no chance for yards after the catch. He also has underthrown the few deep passes attempted, and on at least one occasion leading to an interception instead of a big gainer to Shaheed. It looks like when he drops back, he is deeper than he should be. He isn't in control of his lower body and has to regain his balance before making a throw. In the game against the Chargers he panicked when Fuaga got beat. Instead of stepping up and moving to his left and getting reset he stepped right into a defender, and literally jumped into his arms.

Not hating. Simply what a blind man can see. The young man has plenty talent, but he needs to get much better to play at this level. Pre snap awareness. Ability to audible to a better play. Having a diverse snap count. His has been so predictable the defense has had the advantage getting off the ball. Accuracy and field vision are more important than arm talent. Proof? See Jamarcus Russell and Drew Brees. Cam Newton and Brock Purdy. Take your pick. Rattler/Haener?

All in all, I'll give him a few mulligans. He's a Rookie playing behind a porous offensive line without much time to throw and mostly backup receivers. For all of the talk about his floor and ceiling I'd say we've seen plenty of floor and hope we haven't seen anything close to his ceiling yet. He will have plenty of time to develop.

And for all of the Rattler apologists and excuse makers here I doubt any of you would give the same to either Carr or Haener. Why? Because many of you already bought in and wanted it to be true you can't admit Rattler hasn't played particularly well and has made more mistakes than your lovefest eyes can see. I didn't post in any of the other threads that suggested "Why are people down on Rattler?", or "If Carr can't go next week Haener should get the start", or "Time to give Haener a shot" mainly because the replies were mostly one sided and anybody suggesting otherwise was drowned out with the Rattler narrative. What didn't make sense was all the foregone conclusions that Rattler was the better choice to continue to go with when we hadn't seen what Haener could do by comparison, not just after one game, but two games. It's been repeated here so many times that it has taken a life of its own. I'm not saying Haener is the answer or is better but when you're trying to win without your starting QB it probably makes more sense to try anything to get a spark going. It took this coaching staff 2 1/2 games, or 10 plus quarters to try something different. And still most here have said to continue chopping wood wanting more of it. Doing the same thing over and over expecting...

Trust me, I wanted just like everyone else here to see Rattler light it up from the get-go like a mini Mahomes. Regardless of the reasons, it didn't happen.

Only so many C.J. Stroud, Brock Purdy, and Jayden Daniels come into the league as Rookies and the lights aren't too bright for them. Spencer isn't ready yet.

Rattler 3 Game Stats: 3 Starts, 3 Losses. No Wins. 59 of 99 Passing, 59.6% Completion. 571 Yards. 190 Yards Per Game. 1 TD, 2 Ints. 30.1 Success Rate. 5.8 Yards Per Attempt. 70.7 Rating. 35.5 QBR. 56 On Target Throws, 57.7%. 13 Bad Throws, 13.4%. 5 Drops, 5.2%. 2 Batted Balls. 14 Sacks, 12.39%. 3 Fumbles.

The film breakdown below is only from the 2 plus quarters of play in the Chargers game.

In the bigger picture what appears to have been forgotten is that it is hard enough to win in the NFL with your starting QB. Winning with a backup QB is a low percentage probability for short- or long-term success. Sure, there are exceptions but it's not the norm. Even with Carr in the lineup there was an immediate decline in offensive play as soon as McCoy and Ruiz left the Philly game. Losing Taysom, Shaheed, and Olave (for stretches) compounded the problems. Carr would have struggled, even if not to the same extent as Rattler, under those circumstances. A team can't be expected to win after having over half of the starters out of the lineup. There's a reason they are starters and others are backups. Add to that the Saints front line players were adequate but the teams overall depth is not.

I'm hoping that Carr is able to return and play at a higher level than what we have seen from him to this point. He'll have to do it without a full cast. If the Saint can get the running game going again and work the passing game with more high percentage passes the offense could get back on track with scoring. The Saints have scored a total of 10 points in the first quarter in the past 6 games. That's pathetic. They have to score some points early to have some control of the game.

As far as the 2 young QBs, I would hope Carr stays healthy, the team wins out, and we don't see either one of them again this year. Fat chance of that happening!

Once the Saints become mathematically eliminated for the post-season, I would play both young QBs. I would start one for a half and then play the other in the 2nd half and switch it up the following week. This may only be the final 2 games of the season, but it would give each a lot of experience going into 2025.
