Lord of the Rings Series -- Amazon (1 Viewer)

I will preface by saying I reread LoTR with each of my kids and have muddled through the Simillarian, so I think I know a bit about mid Earth but I haven’t read anything from experts so my ideas are probably way off.

I have also watched only the first episode so I could be about to make a fool of myself but here ogoes-

The story of Morgoth is in the Simillarian and we are talking thousands of years prior to this story - Sauron, who was called Numenor, after being tempted by Morgoth to lead his army to destroy middle earth- the elves made themselves “known” to man and fought to remove the darkness. The elves defeated Morgoth but he melded(?) with Sauron and they retreated to the North. The elves were pretty brutal to the humans who were more or less hunters and gatherers at that point and occupied their lands, they alluded this all to in the beginning.

This was also thousands of years prior to the Hobbit. No rings of power yet. No Mordor. No Rivendale. No dwarf city in the mountain.

So I am assuming that this would cluminate in the true Battle of the Five Armies which means all of the above will have to take place within this series; over like 1000 years so it will be interesting to watch the cultures evolve.

Rivendell, but….point taken….2nd episode was way better than the 1st IMO….

Got it - that would explain why they glossed the entire Simillarian in the opening credits; which ended with defeat of Morgoth.

Which also explains why they've felt it necessary to butcher the hell out of canon.

Skin color and lack of beards aside, there's just so very much in this show that's directly opposite what was established by Tolkein. It's fanfiction.
I can understand the bitter disappointment felt by those who were hoping to see more of Middle-Earth brought to the screen.

That said, as a story, it's leagues beyond the abomination that calls itself the Wheel of Time.

The canon still exists - they’re called books
And I might remind that those books were continually being updated and revised both by jrr as well as christopher

As they're both dead, official canon is set.
Just one item that's egregiously wrong is that Gil-Galad had no right to offer a trip West to anyone. The Valar themselves invited every elf everywhere (except a few whose actions/oaths precluded accepting) to come to Valinor and live there forever.

Those aren’t incompatible
Gil offered them early retirement

Lol. Wasn't done in the show, but it would be a way to get rid of troublemakers/rivals--"I grant you passage to Valinor!," set them a sail, and then let them get mauled by the dragon fish.

It’s a good time to be a fan of fantasy.

I sort of wish this was its own thing and not tied to Tolkien. I generally don’t like prequels because it takes away a lot of the stakes. Spoiler alert, Galadriel and Sauron both live.

So your enjoyment is tied to whether or not someone is going to die?

Nah I think he means there is no sense of dread for her character because we already know here future. Kind of like going back to the prequels and seeing Obi Wan in a fight. We already know what happens to him.

Vader strikes him down and he comes back as a ghost.

But to be real with the person

i just started Romeo & Juliet, don’t tell me what happens, I got a good feeling about these kids

Not really, but more like when spoilers are baked into the premise. What are the stakes here? We know ultimately that Galadriel will fail in her task.

And I liked the first episode. I'm sure I'll like the rest of the show. I'd just rather see this sort of production value in an original world where we don't come in already knowing the fate of the major players.

I'm not really a big spoiler Nazi. But there is a reason people don't want certain narrative events

After Better Call Saul we should be wweeeellllllll past ‘the only stakes are death’ silliness
The HOW something happens is way more important than the WHAT
