Man plans to live out 'golden' age at Holiday Inn instead of retirement home (1 Viewer)

I hate those places. I don't think there are a ton of good options for late in life situations. It's often more than the families can handle when quite a bit of care is needed. I just hope I go before I get to that point but my lifestyle isn't very healthy so I have a 50/50 shot at going out with a bang or dragging along for years.

I spent over 20 years visiting nursing homes and other facilities, 100-150 twice each per year. Some are very nice and some are absolutely horrible. Just a few small steps in those places can make a huge difference, but in some the employees are so bitter they take it out on the elderly.

You are absolutely correct. In what capacity were you visiting?

Nursing homes, like many entities, have a top-down function. If admin is strong the rest of the staff will be as well. Poor admin will result in dysfunction at every other level.

Checking safety equipment (fire extinguishers, hood systems, etc). Luckily my parents have plans in place for outside care and funeral arrangements, except my mother insists on being set afloat on a raft and set ablaze as we play Flight of the Valkyries and sing Kill the Wabbit. My brother and I are still working on that one.

And all this time I thought mine was the World's Coolest Mom!

Sounds like a hilarious woman. I hope you can get that done. Makes my thought of having Mozart's Requiem play while young children throw rose pedals on my casket seem pretty lame.

I want to come to her funeral :)

I'm guessing the burial will be on a boat late at night.
My funeral is to be attended only by drunken rowdy disreputables while Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust is played. Crying will result in the crier being haunted :hihi:

Not a bad idea. If he becomes in need of skilled nursing care, he can locate such care through a home health provider and Medicare will likely pay for it. In October of this year, Medicare changes will push the long-overdue notion of keeping people in their homes as long as possible, so the home health industry is likely to grow substantially.

And I can tell you a Holiday Inn smells better than just about any nursing home :hihi:
Best of all, he is more likely to get visits from family.

Not a bad idea, but I'd pick a different hotel chain. I've got Lifetime Titanium status with Marriott. They'd bend over backwards to cater to me in my golden years.
