Manning Center of attention - too bad it's Archie (1 Viewer)

I like Archie, he is a good guy. I didnt think Archie was upstaging Eli at all and I am sure Eli was happy to have his dad there. I thought the article was kind of harsh.

The one question it did bring to mind for me is whether the "team" is okay with the special treatment Archie, and therefore Eli, might seem to get.

The giants have 50 players. It was a huge moment for all of the players and all of their families. Do all of the players get to have their dads come hang out in the locker room after the game?

The article seemed to imply some of the players were resentful of Archie being in the locker room and him being the story. Burress in particular had a big game and Eli got about ten times more media attention. Now that would have happened whether Archie went to the lockers or not and Burress may have resented that anyway, I do not know.

But I can see if one or more players were resentful of Eli getting too much attention how they might not like Archie being there. Now I agree getting resentful because the qb gets attention is a waste of energy, thats life in football. But I do think the article raises a question if it turns out parents are not allowed in locker rooms but somehow Archie gets preferential treatment.

One might argue if Archie does get special treatment its because he deserves it as the most famous football dad in the world. Its still an issue with two sides.

Why would anyone care about Tom Brady's dad? Did he play in the NFL? Is he a media personality? I would expect similar attention given to Phil Simms should his son ever become fortunate enough to lead a team to thje Superbowl.

It's a great story: Dad toils for horrible team his entire career only to raise two sons who take their respective teams to the Superbowl.

Of course I'm sure there are better places to conduct interviews, but the press' fixation is the issue here and not Archie's willingness to be interviewed.

If my son was playing in that game- would they have let me into that lockeroom???
Probably. I know that I have been in locker rooms and I wasn't related to anyone there before, nor was I there in an official capacity. I was simply the friend or the friend of a friend of a player.

Was this an NFL locker room after the national championship game?

I think the question in this case would be if all player's can have their father or family in the locker room, or just Eli. If its just Eli and Archie, then I think you have to say the writer has a valid point about them getting special treatment.

Now are the Mannings entitled to special treatment? Thats fair debate too I guess.. But I do think its a fair point that Archie might have made himself a little bit of the news by going in the locker, although I think the writer made his poInt in a kind of insulting way.

No.

I can see some restrictions made for this scenario such as the longsnapper's dad or Corey Webster's brother, but no one is going to deny the startibng QB's dad acess if the starting QB arranges it. Let's not pretend that players have the power in the NFL and that Superstars will weild a disproportionate amount of that power.

If Tom Brady's dad wants in and Tom Brady wants him there, I bet it will happen...

No.

I

Probably so. But I think the question the article raises is whether Brady's father would be using good judgment to use his influence to get into the locker room if other parents were not afforded same privelege. (It might not be Archie used influence, it wouldnt surprise me to learn the owner or coah invited him, but if the privelege doesnt extend to other parents it still could cause a problem).

Personally it doesnt bother me that Archie was in the locker room. I do not think he was trying to grab the limelight, I think he just wanted to be with his son who was having a great moment.

My point is that I do think the author has a point and its reasonable to argue Archie used poor judgment in visiting the locker room if its true that privelge did not extend to the fathers of other players.

All my kids played sports and I have been to hundreds of games. In some sports I have had a kid really excel and in others be role players. As a parent I have seen some parents whose kids are the team star say and do things that offend other parents. I can see how some might have been offended in this case.

The author made a bigger deal of it than it is, I just think some people on here dismissed it as being ridiculous when I think he had a fair point to make. To be clear, I think Archie is a celebrity and it wouldnt have bothered me as a player or parent, I just see how it might bother some.

Doyel is terrible. He also trashes anything or anyone related to Ole Miss every chance he gets.

Eli leads his team to the Superbowl and this clown writes this worthless story the day after.

What a loser.... he needs some sunshine in his life.

I just saw some other articles by this idiot, and there are two RECENT ones about the Chargers. One praising Phillip Rivers and another praising Norv Turner. I think I know why he has a problem with Archie. My guess is that he's probably based in San Diego and a Chargers fan and is still p-o'd that Archie refused to allow Eli to play for the Chargers, forcing the trade for Rivers.

I, like many others, think that both the author and the article are utterly moronic. I actually haven't read a stupider and more pointless article since the last time I picked up People magazine. And I couldn't even get halfway through the thing. You all with me on that one?

How does this guy still have a job?

Doyel grew up in Mississippi.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregg_Doyel

If the mainstay of his publishing presence is a response column called "Hate Mail" where he always gets in the last shot, and he's running around writing nice things about Rivers and Turner and ripping people out of left field like Archie Manning, you've got to assume that in lieu of actual talent, he's simply turned himself into an Attention Whore to make a living by taking obnoxious, aggressive stances on the opposite side of consensus on certain issues that can't be proven one way or the other.

In other words, he's a troll. Nothing to see here. Please move on.

I wonder what his SR.com handle is.

OK, so Archie waiting in the hallway outside the locker room (I'm assuming he was waiting to be invited inside to see his son) is being a media sponge? Pure BS.

This obnoxious twit of a writer is accusing Archie of trying to garner attention for himself when that is what this article is all about in the first place: this writer trying to make a name for himself by being the only one "stand uppish" enough to "call out" Archie.
Please, dude. You're more transparent than glass. Take your own advice: Go away, crawl back into your nothing newspaper column and shut up. No one cares what you think.

Well, I am with you 100%, except for that People Magazine thing... How in the WORLD did you make it through half of that rag??? :hihi:

To the point at hand, though, why was this moron standing around this apparent sea of people who were asking Archie questions? Why didn't he ask Burress or this unnamed "defensive starter" some questions when they came by? Was his sole job to refer to Archie Manning at some point as "feces"? Is THAT what cbssportsline has come to? Why didn't this bastion of moral integrity try to get into the locker room to ask questions of the "stars" if he didn't like standing around watching the press ask Archie questions??

And that Tom Brady reference... I don't know what his father looks like because... HIS FATHER ISN'T A FAMOUS PERSON IN HIS OWN RIGHT!!!

What a moronic idiot, not to mention someone who is a very bad reporter. I mean, c'mon. Do your JOB already!

This is basically what I wrote the guy in a response to him, by the way.
