Marcus Williams is one BAD dude! Best Safety in NFL (1 Viewer)

Best at coverage, worst at tackling

Love the dude but he needs to stop dipping his head and whiffing. The Metcalf TD was yet another chapter of "How Not to Tackle at the NFL Level". Just wrap him up and drive him out of bounds and it saves the huge TD.

Also, instead of "clownin' and running", please feel free to contribute to the discussion after reading through the rest of the thread. :)
Ok, so I watched the play at .25 speed on youtube. In doing so, it's clear, Marcus DID NOT take a bad angle or put his head down and whiff. What did happen was DK pumped the brakes and did a little fake juke to the inside which caused Marcus to freeze because if DK had cut inside of him he would of been gone also.

This is simply a very hard tackle to make coming from across the field and to multiply the complexity of it, you have a WR built like Derrick Henry with 4.3 speed.

Had DK kept running in a straight line, without the fake, Marcus is in position to make the tackle...and I believe he would have in that case.

Yeah he's certainly a PFF favorite. And the Saints obviously think highly of him. It appears as though he is a key piece that they want to continue to build around.

But his blunders will always follow him. He's always going to be missed tackle guy. Unfortunately some great athletes become infamous for their blunders.

When I hear Jose Canseco I think of steroids and a ball bouncing off his head for a home run. Gary Anderson was one of the best Kickers in NFL history but when I hear his name I think about his miss that ended one of the greatest seasons ever for the '98 Vikings. John Carney, again, great career. But how do you miss that PAT after one of the best plays ever? Chris Webber, Chuck Knoblauch, Leon Lett, Bill Buckner. All remembered for their mistakes instead of their Pro Bowls and All Star games.
My uncle predicted that Carney would miss the extra point.

"And now in 2021 he already has 3 missed tackles in 6 games. It needs to be cleaned up. He keeps trying to force a big play when he doesn't need to by throwing his shoulder when just wrapping up and directing them out of bounds would be just as good."
Can you cite the source of this stat. I could not find it in the article.

To everyone saying he whiffed on the Metcalf play. He was across the field on that play and it wasn't even his man. He ran from the other side of the field and just couldn't quiet get the angle he needed. It was actually a great play for him to even get as close as he did. That TD was not on him at all. The Minny Miracle is the only bone headed play he's really had in a long time. Trust me when I say I wouldn't want anyone else at his position in the league. We are very close to having an elite defense at every level and no one will take his spot with the way he's playing right now. WHO DAT!!!!!!

His angle was great, but immediately after DK made the cut back to the right, Williams definitely puts his head down and barely gets his left hand on DK’s left leg. If his head was up and still only barely got that little of Metcalf’s leg then that’s even worse.

The “freeze” you’re mentioning definitely creates more situation than DK should’ve had but again, it goes back to trying to force a big play when one wasn’t needed. I understand DK is an absolute specimen of a human being and Marcus isn’t exactly the biggest safety around, but when they were about to meet, Metcalf is at the edge of the hashmark on the sideline which is only 2’ and change from the sideline. He didn’t need to be blasted to get knocked out of bounds. Again, that close to the sideline, wrapping him up would’ve gotten him down or at least off balance enough to step out of bounds and the TD is saved.

Check the article in the OP.

Statistically he's been top 4 in tackling safeties the past couple years. They all miss tackles from time to time. It just seem that when Marcus does miss a tackle, the result is a TD and there are four cameras pointed in his direction.

Undoubtedly they all do miss tackles from time to time, all I'm saying is most of his missed tackles could be prevented by not trying to force a big play when one isn't needed. Like I said a few posts back, I wouldn't have a problem if his tackles were simply being broken if the tackles were fundamentally sound, ie. "seeing what you're hitting".

Regardless, he's still a great safety but he could be grading out even higher leading to even bigger money for him.
