Marcus Williams is one BAD dude! Best Safety in NFL (3 Viewers)

According to PFF, he was THE BEST safety in the league after 4 weeks...can't wait to lock this dude up long term.

Wow in that case he's an obvious trade bait for another WR.

It might be once in a season and I hope it is, but we still have 11 games to go (5 games of which are against some very good offenses that are currently ranked 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th in points scored) and he's already matched his missed tackle totals from all last year. As I said, it needs to be cleaned up before it bites us later in the season, especially against one of those potent offenses.

And that's a fair assessment, but it's also short selling just how good Marcus Williams is. One or two flubbed tackles is nothing compared to him locking down the entire deep field. I know it's hard to believe for a lot of people, but go watch the All-22. He really is one of the best FS/center field safeties around. Most teams don't have the talent to test him.

He's been amazing in the coverage department, no doubt; that won't get a gripe from me. It's just the tackling I'm concerned with. And absolutely, he definitely can turn it around and play lights out the rest of the year because he's already done it twice.

I usually watch a lot of All-22 thanks to the complimentary GamePass, however haven't been able to rewatch anything this year due to the hurricane. I still don't have internet at home and can only post here sporadically thanks to the putrid cell service so trying to stream video is an afterthought until the internet is restored. :hihi:

Unfortunately it looks like Deuce Windham's youtube is down again but he gives about the best breakdowns you can find. Considering how strong DD/Kwon are in coverage, along with Lattimore being top 5 at CB and Adebo playing way above his level as a rookie, the Saints' defense is rarely in a position to rely on Marcus Williams having to make a tackle. 99% of the time he just has to make one step in the right direction to discourage almost every NFL QB from making the throw. And he has the closing speed to make the pick or at least break up the pass if they try to test him.

QBs don't typically test Marcus. When they do, the result usually seems to be an INT. Regardless of his bad form on trying to bring down Metcalf, he still played better than Jamal Adams.
I mean bad angle and everything, he wasn't even supposed to be in that play. He came over from the other side of the field where he was assigned. He just had a bad angle on the attempt.

There really hasn’t ever been much bad to say about him, other than a few missed tackles, which unfortunately were extremely ugly, resulting in TDs. It happens. He’s been great, but has to continue improving there. I will say Metcalf is a hulk of a receiver. I probably would have done the same thing. Lol. But I think if he actively attempts to hold onto the legs, it wouldn’t be a problem to make that one.

Is Marcus Williams a good safety?

Williams has 13 career interceptions in the regular season and one more in the playoffs. Combined, those 14 picks tie him for third among NFL safeties over the past four years. With 30 passes broken up. Pro Football Focus rated him as the league's seventh-best safety in 2020 and fourth best in 2019.Jul 5, 2021

THIS! Marcus Williams’ “problem” is that he has such incredible range that he “almost makes” so many tackles it makes him look bad to the lay person for not making the tackle, but people know who football know that 99% of the safeties in the league wouldn’t’ve even have gotten themselves in the screen shot on those plays yet he makes the play most of those times.

The problem with grading a FS on eye test alone is you only ever see the absolute worst on camera come game time. Go look at the All-22 and you find out that Marcus Williams is shutting down the deep passing game week in and week out, all by himself most of the time.
This. He usually plays so deep you can't see the impact he's having. I can live with a few missed tackles from my FS as long as he's excelling at his primary job.

Hadn’t thought of it that way. That’s a good point.

Did a quick research and this is what I came up with:

I guess it's not as bad as I thought...

"Williams has never had a bad season in the NFL, and that doesn’t look like it's changing any time soon. He has a forced fumble to go along with two picks and a pass breakup so far this season for the Saints. His coverage grade is an impressive 74.9, and his 67.3 run-defense grade is above average despite three missed tackles so far this season.

Williams spends most of his time (88.8% of his snaps) as a free safety, well off the line of scrimmage, so his ability to make as many impactful plays as he does is truly impressive."
I thought that he stunk! I don't watch the games. I only read the board here.
