To me, this is like saying, I don't want Deion Sanders on my team; let's face it, he couldn't tackle a 5 year old. He's been amazing in the coverage department, no doubt; that won't get a gripe from me. It's just the tackling I'm concerned with. And absolutely, he definitely can turn it around and play lights out the rest of the year because he's already done it twice.
I usually watch a lot of All-22 thanks to the complimentary GamePass, however haven't been able to rewatch anything this year due to the hurricane. I still don't have internet at home and can only post here sporadically thanks to the putrid cell service so trying to stream video is an afterthought until the internet is restored.
If he was missing enough tackles that they were indistinguishable, wouldn't that be much much worse?
After reading this response Tebucky Jones popped into my head lol.If he was missing enough tackles that they were indistinguishable, wouldn't that be much much worse?
Sure he's not perfect, but every one upset about a safety giving up 2 touchdowns in 4 seasons should really consider the alterative.
He covers all the back end. Why do you think he grades out so well by evaluators? He is graded top 5 in and out of every year. By evaluators who go to the can and forget more about football, than you or I will ever know. You just don't know what you are talking about. If we want splash plays or someone who terrifies QBs and punishes WRs, Marcus is not the guy. If we're OK with a solid Safety that is usually in position and usually does his job, he's the guy.
Easier "said" than "DONE", obviously! We KNOW he didn't WANT to miss. It's technique which has him by the short and curlies since the minny cat game as with the whiff Monday Night! You KNOW DA did NOT let that go! Still, dude has a gift and a grit to him which he can't lose! Light 'em up Sunday Bruh! "Shine On You Crazy Diamond!"Best at coverage, worst at tackling
Love the dude but he needs to stop dipping his head and whiffing. The Metcalf TD was yet another chapter of "How Not to Tackle at the NFL Level". Just wrap him up and drive him out of bounds and it saves the huge TD.
No, I am in agreement. Unfortunately for MW , though, after that first one it was pretty much doomed to be this way. He could go another two years without missing and people would flip their shirt when he did. I don’t see us ever getting to a point where the bulk of us are not overreacting so the rest just have to learn to find the nuggets of logic within. It’s like the internet at large, 95 percent crap but the other 5% keep us coming back.If he was missing enough tackles that they were indistinguishable, wouldn't that be much much worse?
Sure he's not perfect, but every one upset about a safety giving up 2 touchdowns in 4 seasons should really consider the alterative.
Apples to oranges. Open field tackles and tackles in coverage are entirely different beasts. Sanders would be in a receiver's hip pocket more often than not and even if he surrendered a catch, all he'd have to do is swipe and the receiver's legs and make a tackle. Williams has to cover a lot of ground and then make open field tackles. To me, this is like saying, I don't want Deion Sanders on my team; let's face it, he couldn't tackle a 5 year old.
Honestly, I'd take 6 Marcus William's in the back field...nobody would complete a pass on us. 3rd in INTs for Safety since he's been in the league.
He wasn't a good tackler until last year. It's the Meaningless Miracle. So many people don't even remember him for anything else. So the prevailing groupthink is "Marcus Williams is a bad tackler."
And that will always be truth, despite every single metric says the opposite. Unless we see him visibly make a game changing tackle. Maybe a big one...and the problem is, he's not like Troy Polamalu or Sean Taylor. He doesn't make explosive tackles. He prevents deep shot and picks off bad throws in his range (which is a lot of the field).
But what he does is often hidden on the edges of the screen we can't ever see because unless a QB tests him, he's invisible out there.
Zing! I violently agree! He covers all the back end. Why do you think he grades out so well by evaluators? He is graded top 5 in and out of every year. By evaluators who go to the can and forget more about football, than you or I will ever know. You just don't know what you are talking about.
So...half his career? He wasn't a good tackler until last year.
Yeah he's certainly a PFF favorite. And the Saints obviously think highly of him. It appears as though he is a key piece that they want to continue to build around.PFF has always thought highly of Marcus.
While very funny, it’s just one play. The point of this thread is that outside of a few very bad plays, he has been extremely good. And judging his career on those few plays does him no justice in regard to all of the other good plays he’s had…which is far more than he gets credit for.Did a quick research and this is what I came up with:

They're remembered that way by the same kind of tools who blame Drew Brees for us not making it to the Super Bowl 2017-20. However, they're PAID handsomely by people who recognize what they actually contribute, and appreciated by people who don't fixate on the few negativesYeah he's certainly a PFF favorite. But his blunders will always follow him. He's always going to be missed tackle guy. Unfortunately some great athletes become infamous for their blunders.
When I hear Jose Canseco I think of steroids and a ball bouncing off his head for a home run. Gary Anderson was one of the best Kickers in NFL history but when I hear his name I think about his miss that ended one of the greatest seasons ever for the '98 Vikings. John Carney, again, great career. But how do you miss that PAT after one of the best plays ever? Chris Webber, Chuck Knoblauch, Leon Lett, Bill Buckner. All remembered for their mistakes instead of their Pro Bowls and All Star games.
Correct. There will always be a certain faction of fans who are overly critical without knowing, but thinking they know, the full picture of what that play contributes. I'm glad we have Marcus Williams instead of one of those guys that rank even 10-15 spots below him. Our defense would not be as good as it is without him. They're remembered that way by the same kind of tools who blame Drew Brees for us not making it to the Super Bowl 2017-20.
