Video Mark Gastineau confronts Brett Favre for allowing Strahan to break Sack Record (merged) (1 Viewer)

Farve gave it Strahan and it was intentional. Everyone who watched it in real time new it. I remember it, and I remember immediately thinking it was a junky ordeal. I never once thought of, nor realized the implications that it would hold on Mark Gastineau, mostly because I never recalled watching him play and didn't even know who he was.

Just for clarity, the play call was a running play. Favre deliberately refused the handoff and ran straight to Strahan. Mark was at the game and even stated "no sack in the NFL is a gimmie". He was a good sport about it but clearly held some animosity for it.

Sucks for him. Crappy of Favre. Moving on....

I don't give a flip for any of the 3, but where was the Commissioner? Gastineau should have punched both Favre and the Commish for sullying the game.

Was Favre too big to fine or suspend for laying down? Favre could have had a huge bet that Strahan would get X number of sacks in that game.

Naaah... surely Favre wouldn't gamble, that's just me being cynical.

Gastineau looks like he's taken one too many shots to the head. Poor guy.

Favre was getting sacked on that play no matter what, Strahan was unblocked right in his grill. He didn't take a flop for the record, he just went down so neither he nor Strahan got hurt.

Was the O Line in on it? I have no idea. But Favre pretty much had no choice but to go down.

Which also begs the question - TJ Watt tied Strahan's record of 22.5, without any flops, so why is Gastineau so mad? His record would be broken by now anyway.

This would be a good time to hurry and delete that post lol

Wow. Once Brett saw he was serious he started slowly backing up. But Mark is right...Favre did give that record to him. I remember at the time it happened I was disgusted

That was weird! I believe the 1980’s called and wants that greasy mullet back.

I know Brett can be a bit of a "whatever you want to call him", but I found his response on Twitter to be super measured, thoughtful, and respectful.

Favre has also learned how to be good at manipulating public opinion or MSM sports outlets to re-write or reinterpret the narrative to fit his view instead of what actually may have happened over the years. He's become quite skilled at it, honestly. I don't think Brett Favre gave two sheets back in 2001 when he intentionally decided to allow Strahan a " gimme sack" on a previously-designed run play he ignored to roll out and let Strahan get his 22.5 sack for that season and he didnt care that some NFL fans, writers, "purists", or Gastineau himself would be put off.

Frankly, I suspect that's still partly his attitude behind closed-doors because as this same above-mentioned article mentioned, this incident happened well over a year ago and Favre didnt reach out, or try to give any explanations, reasons explaining his motives or attempt to apologize to Gastineau until this advance clip from the upcoming ESPN 30 for 30 " New York Sack Exchange " got released a few days ago.

So yeah I agree that Favre's response was measured, thoughtful but I do wonder if he was truly being "respectful". If Favre really wanted to be respectful to how Gastineau felt, he wouldve said this over a year ago and not risk him looking like a tacky prick to try and " empathize" after this confrontation went public. It's measured but its also calculated to try and bring new "perspective" to an incident where Favre comes up looking kind of bad.

I understand and realize I'll probably get some critical, face-palming emoji responses but my opinion of Brett Favre, his motivations and decision-making especially as it relates to his purported or suggested involvement in recent improprieties with state of Mississippi has turned a bit negative over the past couple of years.

Reggie White had 21 sacks in 12 game season in the 80s...
Al Baker had 23 in 1978 which to me is the real record

TJ Watt broke Mark's record as well in 2021 with 22.5 sacks

Jared Allen tied Mark's record in 2011

So take Strahan's sack out of the equation and Mark still does not have a record. Dude needs to shut up and just go away. He sounds ridiculous

I can’t find the answer online. They started recording sacks in the 80’s. When did they start giving out sacks for forcing a fumble on the QB, or has that always been considered a sack? I feel like it changed at some point and originally you weren’t credited for a sack if you forced a fumble, but may be wrong.

Speaking of that. The NFL does credit sacks where college does not in certain situations. I know that is a little off topic from what you are saying, but I recall reading this a while back.

According to AI strip sacks have always counted as sacks depending though upon what happens right after the fumble. For example, what happens with the recovery
