Video Mark Gastineau confronts Brett Favre for allowing Strahan to break Sack Record (merged) (1 Viewer)

That record was probably a source of financial income in addition to pride for Mark. I get his emotional response to being hurt about it.

I think this is the big thing. Gastineau probably got more money at these card conventions when he was a record holder, his fee probably took a hit when Strahan broke it.

Side bar.
How is Mike not in the Hall?
I know his record got broken, but to do that in one season? I think he deserves a spot.

I think Gastineau's issue isn't the record being broken but how it was broken. Imagine if someone ties Brees' 54 consecutive TD pass record and in the 55th game, game practically decided, the opposing team lays down and let's the QB "throw" a touchdown because they are cool with him or friends. As Saints fans, I think we all would be annoyed to see our guy lose his record like that. If it's broken, fine, but you would like to see it happen within the competitive framework of the sport. I couldn't imagine Ohtani sitting on 73 homers and in his last at bat of the season getting a changeup down the middle of the plate to "break" the record.

I think had the Jets had a season like the 09 Saints during the New York Sack Exchange era, there wouldn’t be this resentment.
You can’t even live off being a NY legend because the Jets are the B team there.

Wouldn’t they be the last team as it comes to ranking sports teams in NYC even behind the Liberty

Just getting back from NYC (stayed in Times Square for the Saints/Giants game, I got the feeling NYC is more Knicks than anything else.

Well they are the best thing going right now sports wise in NYC that’s in season

It’s weird to me when people are protective over their records.

I get that the sack, in question, was controversial but to just cling to those records like the game will never grown and evolve past you just baffles me.

Similarly to how Eric Dickerson actively roots against his single season yardage record from falling. Just doesn’t make sense to me.
I think his record is safe

Why wouldn’t people want their records to stand forever? Why you think the undefeated Dolphins always popped champagne when the last undefeated team would lose each year?

It's not plausible Saquon doesn't have an outside chance of breaking it this year considering he has over 1,600+ rushing yards so far with 4 games left to play and he has 1-2 more 180-190 rushing yard games that put him over 2,000 rushing yards in a single-season. There's a very strong chance Saquon surpasses 2,000 rushing yards by Weeks 17 or 18, and he might be the closest all-around, duel-purpose superstar RB since Adrian Peterson to break Dickerson's record and AP came very, VERY CLOSE to breaking it in that 2012 season-finale game vs. Packers where he literally went off against Pack and co.

Saquon Barkley does have a puncher's shot, IMHO, of reaching and surpassing Dickerson's 1984 NFL single-season rushing record.

Tainted records you say?

Drew Brees set the single season passing yardage record in 2011.

Peyton Manning would break it by 1 yard a couple seasons later.

OR DID HE? The pass that Peyton threw was his last ‘completion’ of the season. It was a ‘pass’ to Wes Welker that netted a few yards.

You are probably wondering why I’m quoting the words ‘completion’ and ‘pass’.

It’s because the play in question was NOT a forward pass.

The ball was hiked and Peyton threw a swing ‘pass’ to Welker. In replays the ball was thrown backwards behind the LOS.

In replays you could tell it was technically a lateral.

The Broncos were blowing out the opposition and Peyton never played the 2nd half.

By the time it was midway through the 4th quarter there was buzz on Twitter about the ‘pass’. People were freaking out. It was clearly NOT a forward pass, and many were wondering if the Broncos caught wind of it and would send Peyton back into the game.

They didn’t.

In the days following, Elias Sports Bureau (in a now deleted post) said that while they could not confirm it was a forward pass they would not remove those yards from Manning’s stats due to “fairness”. All because they said that if Peyton and the Broncos knew of the potential error that he would have simply re-entered the game and threw another pass.

Good luck finding records of that Elias statement and even better luck finding the replay of that record setting ‘pass’

Found the still shots. Ball was clearly thrown at the 49.5 line and caught between the 48 and 48.5 yard line.
