NFL Draft Mel Kiper or Mike Mayock: Of the two, who has more cred in your book? (1 Viewer)

Mayock, but Kiper has better hair!LOL

Gruden was well known to override his experts in the draft room. We really don't know who drafted who in the Mayock/Gruden tenure.
Can't give Mayock credit for the good picks and blame Gruden for the mistakes though.

Mock drafts are purely entertainment. Many use info they have gotten from other reporters to put together mocks for TV and the internet. I look more at the detailed analysis of the players. Mayock was pretty good, although he died on some odd hills for players, but many do that to try to be the "I told you so" guy. Kiper and Bushbaum were always the best and had great indepth information on players in their draft guides.

If Mayock rejoined NFL Network during draft season I would probably watch it way more than I do now

The numbers disagree w/you.
It's about accuracy of pick, not best description.

Mayock is an NFL personnel guy. Kiper is an information gatherer.

Have read draft analyses for over 40 years. Easily Kiper is much better. Kiper and Bushbaum have always been the most reliable in analyzing the players and I miss both of their draft guides. Kiper is a big part of the reason that the NFL draft became such a huge media event. I do not put much faith in any mock drafts as that is just purely entertainment in my mind.

Kiper and Mayock are two different "generations." Mel Kiper and Paul 'Dr. Z" Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated pioneered as early hosts of ESPN's draft coverage back in the day, and Kiper was the star. There is no Mike Mayock without Mel Kiper. Kiper was far more knowledgeable and entertaining than his partner Paul Zimmerman. He, Chris Berman, and Bob Ley elevated the franchise.

And that's why Kiper's still around. He carries a legacy, just as the weird talking Joel Bushbaum did.

By different generations, I don't mean in age.

Mayock is actually 2 years old than Kiper. I mean in draft coverage. Kiper started at ESPN in 1984, and Mayock started at NFLN in 2004. ESPN launched draft coverage in 1980, but cable was just starting, so not everyone saw it then.

Kiper was a mere 24 years old when ESPN launched the draft coverage.

Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt-- yes Mayock was a GM for the Raiders 2019 to 2021 but he was not good at drafting. Maybe Kiper would be bad too, but Mayock's best first rounder was Josh Jacobs 24th overall in 2019 and that was when he had three first rounders that year and the other two were Clelin Ferrell fourth overall who can barely make a roster and retread Johnathan Abram. In 2020 he drafted Henry Ruggs III who killed a person in his automobile and is out of the league and Damon Arnette who ended up on the Dolphins practice squad. 2021 was Alex Leatherwood who was a backup for the Bears and now the Chargers. I am sorry that is a bunch of garbage and by default I have to go with Kiper.

When you look at a guy like Mel Kiper Jr you're talking about an innovator. Here's a guy who created an industry. He was the first guy to devote his life to watching film and breaking down the draft. Say what you want but the guy is a living legend. A national treasure. Did he always know what he was talking about? No. Did he have some huge misses? Of course. But was he entertaining? Yes.

There can only be one king of Spring draft talk. You can keep Mayock and all of the other experts who actually know the game. Give me Kiper.
