NFL Draft Mel Kiper or Mike Mayock: Of the two, who has more cred in your book?

Kiper was kind of the OG in the space.
Mayock had more success talking about the draft in the media and who would be good vs not in terms of accuracy but utterly bombed out as a GM which is interesting.
Matt Miller is good.

But Jason Boris is the best. By a long shot. There is no runner up to him, its that big of a gap.
Mayock had a good draft in 2019 (even though his first pick wasnt his best).

The problem as it appears to me is that he seems to have fallen into the need trap. Drafting by need works against his talents to evaluate. And leads to silly things like taking 3 WRs in your first 4 picks (2020 Draft)

Making draft guides and projecting need is great for the Draft Media business, but its horrible for the GM business. By the time you get a draft grade IRL nobody is going to remember or care what your needs were when you drafted the players.

I still can't believe the Raiders made him a GM. Lol that was one of the wildest moves of all time. Like the Reds hiring Peter Gammons to coach the ball club. Or the Knicks giving the nod to Stephen A.

I’m actually kinda shocked by the responses. I “think” Kiper would be bad. But we “know” Mayock was bad.

Five questions:

1. Has Mel Kiper ever worked for an NFL team? No.

2. Has an NFL team ever tried to hire Mel Kiper? My guess is no. And incidentally, Bell Belichick tried 20 years ago to hire Joel Buchsbaum.

3. Has Mel Kiper ever had the respect in the NFL community that Joel Buchsbaum had? I would suggest no. When Buchsbaum died, the number of top NFL people who attended services for him was amazing.

4. How much of Mel Kiper's grading is based on film study and how much is based on his communications with contacts in the league? I really don't know, but I suspect he is largely an information gatherer.

5. Is Mel Kiper even qualified to evaluate players based on film study? I have my doubts.

Thank you. I was listening to a podcast yesterday and they were so focused on drafting for need that I was struggling to finish listening to it.

Loomis has been forced into relying heavily on drafting for need since the Covid cap year and it's killed our drafting as a result. This is the first FA in a while where we've been able to make enough moves to fill most of our immediate needs so I'm hoping we can get back to good drafting.

Mel Kiper is like if one of the people from this board that pretends to be a draft expert got hired by ESPN

I can't remember the last time Kiper was accurate in his mock drafts.
In 2004, he got 13 of 32 1st round picks correct and was off on average by -1.875 spots per pick.

I happen to have his mocks from 03, 04, and 05. His 05 mock is abut average with an average variance of pick by -5.656 spots.

I also have his 06 mock but never graded it.
