Mike Garafolo: Saints are set to make a decision on Derek Carr within the next few weeks; likely to have multiple suitors if released (61 Viewers)

I actually did and most of those guys are fine, but the problem that we find ourselves in is continuing to restructure older players. We have to get away from that ideology. I would not touch Davis or Tyrann‘s deals. And also don’t restructure contracts for players you don’t see here long-term. so anyone borderline I wouldn’t touch a.k.a. Saunders.
Oh I get it for sure. There aren't any good options. But the difference is a lot of those guys also have a bunch of guaranteed salary in 2025 anyway and Carr has offsets in his contract that we could theoretically get back when he signs to a new team.

Restructuring Davis would move his 2026 cap number to $14.3m instead of $8.7m. Tyrann would go to $11.7m instead of $7.2. That's $10.1m increase from what will be there regardless when their contracts void in 2026. There are some others, but they are even smaller. But cutting Carr as a June 1 this year lowers his 2026 cap hit to $28m instead of more than $55m if we were to fully restructure him. Which is what we'll have to do if not messing with the other contracts. AND we don't leave the new coach with the old coaches QB. It makes sense to me.

Strawman much?

Not going to bother continuing this back and forth since you have an answer for everything despite factual data I provide.
11 year career he’s been to the playoffs a single time (9 seasons ago) and never won a playoff game

Career losing record (15 games under .500)

Career passing stats since he’s been in the league rank him straight average.

Has had seen more head coaches and coordinators fired than another starting QB during the same time

Those are all factual data you just choose to ignore. At what point 11 years in does everyone else stop being the problem?

Oh it makes sense, and I know there’s no good options, I just think it’s trade him (least likely), cutting him prior to march 13th or keeping him this season are the only probable options.

If you mean cutting him with a June 1 designation before his salary is guaranteed on the 15th, then I totally agree. There is not real way to cut him outright this year. It would only save $1.3m on the 2025 cap and we need more than that to be able to sign rookies later.

There’s absolutely reworking that has to take place since we are over so much so they will account for rookies in that same movement of restructuring deals

Yeah and how about if cut prior to march 13, bc the team isn’t going to keep him until June 1 just to cut him. You also restructured 3 players 34 years or older. That does significantly hurt our future cap and is a terrible idea.
You don’t wait until June 1 to cut him, you cut him with a June 1 designation.

And yes I restructured those players, you don’t have a choice in it, but if you read I accounted for their restructures taken out of the available cap space in 2026 where we would still have 75+ million available even if we cut all 3 due to being completely done with Carr and not having a penny of his 61 million dollar cap hit on the books.

The issue is you don’t get the cap relief from the designation until after the league year is the point meaning again you have to be cap complaint by march 13th. I know you know this I’m just reiterating.

I just don’t think it’s a good idea to restructure the contracts of your older players who would then be paying after they are retired/gone from the team. It will affect us in 2026 and beyond.

I’m not really sure what you’re trying to say? He has no one to blame but himself for the seven games he missed this season. Both times he was injured it was on scrambles where instead of sliding he dove forward and try to make a play when nothing was on the line. Can’t be that negligent as the QB.
DC's 1st injury was against KC and he was not scrambling. the KC rusher broke free and DC had to throw it quick and got an oblique strain

I think Carr is done. Moore is going to want a young QB and grow on it. Rattler was improving at the end of the season. Perhaps we pick up another QB in the draft. Los to go on but I think Carr”s days are numbered.

OMG , can you tell me what position Carr plays on DEFENSE? . Does Carr hand the ball off to HIMSELF 40% of the offensive plays ?
This INSANITY of thinking that the QB, ANY QB is solely responsible for the losing or winning of a game is just MINDBOGGLING

C'mon man you really have to know that , right??? SMH SMH SMH

According to Carr, he got injured throwing the ball, in other words, a non-contact injury? That's worth shaking the head over. A non-contact injury from the guy who touches the ball every offensive possession, except when the older guy with the 20 year injury rap sheet takes the snap.

We get it. Derek Carr isn't to blame for anything. You will never give him criticism.

You are just making excuses for the guy, again. The only people who will remember that Derek Carr played for the Saints are Saints fans. Some will remember the two years with empathy and appreciation. 90% of us will see it as a failed gamble for a QB who was benched by a perennial non-playoff team, in service to our head coach who failed and was fired midseason in his 3rd year by the owner.
