Mike Garafolo: Saints are set to make a decision on Derek Carr within the next few weeks; likely to have multiple suitors if released (15 Viewers)

Having someone as the "future starter" only requires someone to say it and they aren't that reckless. However, there was an article recently that the front office was high on Rattler and there are now articles coming out about them having to make a decision on Carr. All during the time we were waiting on Moore to be hired. It could be coincidental, but that's a lot of smoke.

I'm not worried about deciphering smoke right now.

My point is simply that the Falcons had already invested a 1st in their future QB. Their life after Cousins is already sorted out. That's the part the Saints have to figure, short term and long term.

I know you're just ready to have Carr out of the picture (again, I'm open to that) but it comes down to what Moore wants and what approach the front office wants to take. Salary cap is very much a factor in all of this, as you know. It's not prohibitive, but the team has a lot of pieces to this to sift through and make work.

These guys work less than any normal human being getting paid multi millions of dollars to play a game. Don’t you dare compare that to family’s that both parents have to struggle to work and have commitments to their jobs they have to go to in order to keep their job and keep the lights on at their homes.

Uh, yeah, I'm also a human being who understands what is required to make it in the world. I also understand family, responsibilities, and not dragging people without all the information.

So I did dare do that.

Two thoughts in regards to Carr.

The bigger issue is valuation. Hard to figure out right? This at least provides some context.

Running through all the starters the three worst in terms of valuation (roughly meaning pay vs performance)?

1. Dak Prescott
2. Deshaun Watson
3. Derek Carr

Click the valuation tab, it’s available for all players.

While it’s not perfect it at least gives a framework to go by.

Second and separate thought:

In line with your thoughts.

Its very perplexing that there is a segment of folks who somehow think Carr can’t be let go? What has he ever done in his career to warrant such treatment is beyond me. All of the QBs in the example are far more accomplished and are or will be let go. Now Rodgers.

And yet somehow to some fans Carr is untouchable?

I don’t get it at all.

There’s financial flexibility considerations to factor in, that all.

We aren’t in an ideal place to take on dead money hits, like most teams, but our constraints are in a lot tighter spot at the moment.

Some want us to bite the bullet now, others prefer to wait until things are a little less tight (next year) to make the move while also buying us time to (hopefully) have the replacement firmly in place.

It’s a legitimate, debatable predicament; even I’ll acknowledge that.

It isn't that he is untouchable it is just the fact that there isn't a big savings for cutting him this year...

Why would you cut him & help another NFL team?

Respectfully as possible there are a number of fans who are not looking at this from emotional perspective.

This is the same discussion that tore apart the Raider fans prior to the Saints.

So you’re the type of person who is paid to be a high up executive, and you have a huge presentation with your company that could lead to huge returns, something you knew about in advance was on schedule and your one of the senior guys that represents your company during the year. Then the month after that there are no crucial meetings. And you would take off a week early to miss this crucial presentation because your family was more important? You have all the means to just go the following week, but instead of giving back to the company that pays you all the money, you just wanna be selfish?

Quick way to get fired my friend.

Derek Carr is one of 32 faces of a franchise, he took the money and lives a complete outlandish lifestyle with generational wealth, in return, he should be representing New Orleans at the Super Bowl and be in the building this week to be part of a new chapter, that’s part and parcel of being a leader. Whether the Saints want it or not, especially with how rocky the situation has been with him, him doing that would be a clear indication he wants to do his best to make it work.

After this week, guy has what? 5 months to go to Spain the whole time if he wants? Come on man.

Can you provide examples of other QBs that did this “Be there to greet the new HC” over the past month? Just curious, because for as closely as I have followed these things, I don’t remember this ever actually being any sort of typical ritual. Usually the “Greetings” involve guys that just so happened to be there on other business. “Ran into them in the hallway”/“(Player X) is here, you should go downstairs and meet him” type stuff.

seems to me DC should have been there Super Bowl week for media AND for this announcement. If guy wanted to be a leader and try and make things work, it would go a long way. I don’t know another team in the NFL that has such a mercurial relationship between its fans and the QB right now. Not to mention his brother slinging mud on twitter.

That isn't true. Cutting him has very real savings for this year and next. If he was a June 1 cut, the team would get $30m back in cap in June and it cuts his cap hit for 2026 in half.

I'm not in the least bit concerned with the "helping another NFL team" aspect. Also not concerned with how much money it saves us this year. It's all about getting this rebuild right, and there's no upside to keeping Carr when we're rebuilding this thing.

It speeds up the process of our rebuild. If we decide to play Rattler, it gives us a large sample size under Moore on whether or not he can be a top tier QB in this league. And if it he isn't, which there's a strong likelihood he isn't, it puts us in a prime position to actually land a guy we can build around in the 2026 draft.

Alternatively, you keep Carr, and he'll teeter between average and good, like he always has, which will lead to a wasted year. Not good enough to win anything, not bad enough to land a premiere pick, and we'll wonder why we kept him and wasted a year in a pivotal rebuild. We know he's not the guy now, so the move is to rip the band-aid off and move forward regardless of the savings this year versus next year, and regardless of what other team it might help.

Carr isn't a "high up executive" he's a QB on a football team. While I can agree that with that, comes some responsibility to represent the organization, unless the team has a problem with his absence, I'm not going to jump to conclusions about it.

it’s not worth arguing over either way at this point.

It never was worth it arguing over really. Regardless of what anyone says, he had a choice to show up or not. It wasn't a requirement for him to be there. He chose not to when many others chose to come, including the guy behind him that wants his job. People will judge him for it or they won't. The team could judge him for it or not.
