Mike McCarthy will be back in 2024 (1 Viewer)

As McCarthy should. 12-win coaches don’t come around often.

Jerry Jones should try to add more playmakers beside Lamb and fix their secondary instead of playing musical chairs with winning-record head coaches every few years.

I would agree but coaches are always walking on thin ice with Jerry. News like that is just a little shocking knowing their history.

One of their biggest personnel mistakes was allowing Amari Cooper to leave via FA to Cleveland after the 2021 post-season. Cooper gave them that extra, #2 WR Pro-Bowl caliber role where he produced 1,000 yards and added an extra dimension to the Cowboys passing offense. Besides Lamb and a good, up-and-coming TE in Ferguson, and a serviceable TE in Schultz, their WR corps lacks depth. Cooper provided them that depth and allowing him to leave was, and still is, mind-boggling. Especially considering how great of a WR he's become with the Browns over the past two seasons.

Yes, it is a different discussion when your team is a 10+ playoff team like Dallas, Philly, or Pitt. However, at a certain point, you do have to evaluate whether or not they're achieving the ultimate goal or being a championship-caliber team. Hence, you do let Any Reid or Bill Cowher go after a certain point.

He got it right for once. I think he and his sons realized Belichick or Harbaugh don’t offer much more than McCarthy. They’ll cost more, want some personnel control and Belichick may not coach beyond 3-4 more years since he’ll be 72. It’s smarter to just build on McCarthy’s .700 win % over the last 3 years and add better players.

If this were 10-15 years ago, there's a decent chance Jerry wouldve fired McCarthy and gone after HC's like Belicheck or Harbaugh, gave them some vague, illusory promises and guarantees about greater personnel decision-making that Jones wouldn't unlikely cede or give up because he's such a paranoid, control freak that is determined to win another Super Bowl according to this stubborn ownership philosophy of doing it his way.

Jones knows and recognizes his impending mortality, he realizes he likely won't be alive 10 years from now, and another HC change/turnover, massive overhaul of assistant coaches that accompany it, so he doesn't want to blow it up.

Not surprising to me. I don’t think Jerry wants to start over at his age. The only way I could see him switching coaches is if he could’ve gotten a Belicheck or Tomlin.

I think he's more patient than people realize; he let Jason Garett stay a little too long.

McCarthy would have been a top 3 candidate for the open Head Coaching jobs in the 2024 cycle had he been fired. He doesn't get the respect he deserves but he also warrants some of the criticism he gets, such as clock management. The man has been coaching in the NFL for 30 years. His first HC job was in 2006 when the Packers choose him over Sean Payton. People readily accept the notion the SP is a HOF coach, but that moniker isn't used on MM as fast. Compared records:

McCarthy Head Coaching Records: Payton Head Coaching Records:

30 Years NFL Coaching Experience - Age 60
25 Years NFL Coaching Experience - Age 60

17 Years As Head Coach
16 Years As Head Coach (Payton Suspended 2012 Season)

1 Superbowl Championship
1 Superbowl Championship

1 Superbowl Appearance
1 Superbowl Appearance

1 Conference Championship
1 Conference Championship

8 Division Championships
7 Division Championships

Overall Regular Season Record 167 Wins, 102 Losses, 2 Ties (.620
) Overall Regular Season Record 160 Wins, 98 Losses (.623)

Playoff Appearances As Head Coach - 12
Playoff Appearances As Head Coach - 9

Playoff Record 11 Wins, 11 Losses (.500)
Playoff Record 9 Wins, 8 Losses (.529)

10 Win Seasons - 11
10 Win Seasons - 9

Head Coach of Two NFL Teams
Head Coach of Two NFL Teams

Made Playoffs As HC of Two NFL Teams
Made Playoffs As HC of One NFL Team

The comparisons are almost identical. McCarthy has coached one more season than Payton due to the bounty gate bs suspension in 2012. Payton has a narrow edge in winning percentage. McCarthy has the edge in Division Championships, Overall Wins, Playoff Appearances, Playoff Wins, and 10 Wins Seasons.

There should be a slight overall edge in favor of McCarthy but that's probably not what the results would suggest were a national poll to ask who has had the best coaching career so far.

Thoughts?
