The vast majority of the time the books are way better than the movies based on them. But what about where the reverse is true.

Here is my list:

Jaws - Book better than okay not quite good. Movie is a forever classic

Forrest Gump - Book is absolute garbage. I remember that the author was suing for more money. Now it was ridiculous for the studio to claim the movie phenom of summer "94" not only made no money but was actually in the red, but the author was lucky for whatever he got and very lucky that the movie wasn't a more faithful adaptation

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?- Love both the book and the movie but both are so completely different not sure it counts. I would love to see a movie that's truly based on the book

Let the Rght One In. I felt the book was just weird for weird's sake, but the movie really captured the overall atmosphere and story without all the unnecessary stuff. i.e. Eli's castration, caretaker's boner, caretaker's zombification, etc.

I also like the LOTR movies better than the books too, for what it's worth.

The first one i agree with. The second? Hell no! And I loved the movies. Absolutely loved them but the books are so rich and filled with depth that it will be a very long time before something in the genre surpasses it.

i've tried reading the books several times since I was in middle school. i just can't get into them. Love all the movies though

You say rich and filled with depth, I say over-descriptive and plodding.:hihi: I won't argue this point though, because I read them all once in high school and you've probably read them multiple times. Any argument about specifics would just make me look like a doofus.

A little out there, but Howl's Moving Castle was a much better movie than book. The book was pretty awful and scatter-brained.

I agree that the LOTR movies are better than the books for me. And I very much agree with them being over-descriptive and plodding. I've even read them twice to see if they grew on me the second time around. They just don't "move". 2 solid paragraphs describing the surrounding trees in a bit much for me. I like to lose myself in the "story" and not the descriptions so much. There was just too little story for the number of pages.

And I actually think this is why it translated so well to the big screen is that there was so little "story" in the books that they were able to fit in almost everything into the movies.

i didn't even know that it was a book

I agree about Forest Gump. Thought it was an awful book. Stars just did a mini series of Pillars of the Earth. One of the worse best seller books I've ever read. Just trash in my opinion.
Beaches in another great movie from an okay book.

I thought Fight Club was better as a movie than the book.
