N/S Cutler trade to Bears (mega merge)

the problem with this trade is that it ignores a historical fact.....the bears don't need a good qb to be successful....their formula, based on location, is a great defense and a great running game and good ST. by giving up all those high picks, it hurts the abiliyt to make the defense great or even adding another OT which they need. you can't throw the ball after october in chicago.....

With their inability to strike gold in the 1st round (with the exception of Urlacher) does anyone else think the Bears got a great deal out of this? If not, consider that the money involved in taking in a franchise caliber QB pales in comparison to the amount of guaranteed money they could spend on 2 first round draft picks. I think the Bears came out pretty well here.

That being said....F(*&% the Bears!!! I still don't like them.

Cutler is going to be under a microscope now. He wasnt when he was drafted because of the two QBs that were drafted in front of him were higher profile pics.

Can a guy who has shown really poor judgment in how he handled this whole fiasco, in a very immature way, handle all the pressure that goes with playing in Chicago and being asked to be the best QB the franchise has ever seen? Guess we'll find out.

QB's that can throw for 4500 yards and 25 TD's are elite.

I'm going to join in with an opinion and some stats.

I think this is an upgrade for the Bears and a solid deal for the Broncos. The Broncos will be worse in the short run but if they use these picks well, they could be the class of the west for years to come. As for the Bears, while this makes them better, it doesn't scare me as a Saints fan. They still have a lot of holes include OL and WR. And Orlando Pace doesn't fix the problem.

I don't Cutler is elite yet. He could still go either way. Look at his number from the last two years.

That's not elite but he's young.

The Bears historical formula of focusing on defense is one reason the O in general and QB in particular haven't been good historically. It's part of their DNA. Does any Saint fan think that we'll have a better D than O as long as Peyton runs the team?

But here's my point, the Bears defense wasn't that good in the last two years.

2008 - #16 in points allowed, #21 in yards per game allowed
2007 - #16 in points allowed, #28 in yards per game allowed

So the Bears will need to be more balanced because the D can't carry them any more.

I say bring them on when we host them in the 2009 NFC Championship game (if they get there.)

I think the Bears D showed us last year that they are still really good. As usual they fell apart late though and I believe thats the story the stats tell. I'd say their offense being near the bottom in TOP isn't helping matters.

Keep in mind that Bears' Quarterback Sid Luckman started "the modern era."

In reverse order...

2003 Rex Grossman Is in his ninth season with the team and has started 31 games and has a 70.2 QB rating. Lost a Superbowl in 2007.

1999 Cade McNown Lasted two years with the Bears and is known in Chicago as being a gutless cry baby. In one game he refused to play the second half because he wasn't playing well. Is best known for having, and using, a handicapped placard in his car.

1987 Jim Harbaugh Was sentenced to seven years with the Bears and started for five of them. Was best known in Chicago for being Ditka's whipping boy. Had his best years in Indianapolis.

1982 Jim McMahon Played a total of 66 games in seven years for the Bears. He was offensive rookie of the year in '82 and led the team to a Superbowl in '85. Known in Chicago as a good team mate and a bad employee. Those of us who were Bears fans at the time loved him and still have a soft spot for him. Nobody else likes him.

1951 Bob Williams Played three years with a QB rating of 55.8 lifetime.

1948 Bobby Layne I think that he played one season with the bears and sat behind Luckman and Lujack. Best quarterback that the Lions ever had. How that helps the Bears I don't know.

1946 Johnny lujack Started after Luckman and went to two pro-bowls. Played five years and started two or three.

1942 Frankie Albert Didn't play for the Bears. Credited with inventing the bootleg play (while with the 49ers).

1939 Sid Luckman Played until 1950 and won four championships credited with being the first modern era quarterback.

You have to go back to 1946 for the last time that the Bears drafted a pro bowl caliber quarterback who played for them and he sat for two or three years before seeing the field.

You have to go back 60 years to find a dominant quarterback who was drafted in the first round by the Bears.

The Halas/McCaskey family does not want to pay for a quarterback and never has. In this case they find it to be acceptable because they won't have to pay for two first round picks due to the trade.

Congrats again, I dislike the Bears but I have kind of felt sorry for the fans having to endure Grossman all those years.

So Hester is this "bigtime proven receiver" now? C'mon, you can't be serious about that. One more question, how many receiving yards did Hester have last year. I guess its was his QB. Right?

Cutler too, has a gunslinger mentality...ala Brett Favre, who I love, but he (Cutler) is also good for 18 or more picks, without putting up the amount of TD's as REALLY GOOD QB's(Brees, Manning, Rivers, default Brady)

Heheh Hester is not a bigtime proven receiver... yet. He is still developing there is no doubt, but i also don't have any doubt of how dangerous he is, even tho he hasn't fully developed as a receiver yet. Once he really learns how to be a receiver, how dangerous do you think he will be?

Cutler, is a very good qb, he put up great numbers last year, and i'm guessin they won't be as high playing for the Bears as you pointed out earlier, but you know what he won't miss that easy quick slant pass, that 5 to 10 yard out that i've seen the other two clowns they called qb's that played for bears over or under throw by 5 yards. These are the things that kill drives. Cutler makes that offense solid, dangerous.

The other thing I haven't seen posted is poor old Detroit... Lot of people had Cutler going there. Now arguably, they lost again.

Not only did they NOT get Cutler, he ended up going to the NFC North to put a whoopin' on them twice a year.

Then again, those two losses will go nicely with the other 14...

I dunno. the Lions finally cleaned out the horrible coaching staff and GM, so they are starting fresh. You saw how much the Falcons changed in a year.
