This is a strategic hit piece. He's essentially putting all the blame on Hackett while taking it off of Wilson. He's likely trying to get Wilson's confidence up to what he needs it to be. There were rumblings about teammates not being okay with Wilson's special privileges last season and Payton is trying to place the blame off of Wilson and placing it everywhere else.

Will it work? Who knows but Payton doesn't get this careless especially after all he's been through. This was definitely planned on his part.

To be fair, Payton left the cupboard pretty bare when he left. I'm not saying that this is a better coached team than when Payton was here, but it's definitely a much better team than the one Payton left DA with. Whether that translates to wins is still to be determined, but the pieces are there. And, DA deserves credit for that.

Payton really buried Hackett. I’m not sure I can remember him being so highly critical of another coach. I mean alluding to it yeah but he was very blunt here.

i think it's very smart for 2 reasons:
- largely put last years failure on the dude tossed out on his ear (and not your ancient QB who you need to be somewhere close to his old self
- puts a shot across the bow to some of the top brass that he doesn't want interference in running the team

-- buys himself a bit of time in both circumstances

Like DA’s “carve the turkey” introductory press conference? Payton will be just fine, most people won’t remember this interview come September, let alone in a year…
