A controversial nine-hour long Netflixdocumentary about Prince will not be released by the streaming service, and may never be broadcast.

The film was directed by Ezra Edelman who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary for his almost eight-hour long 2016 feature about OJ Simpson, OJ: Made in America.

The lengthy film about Prince was commissioned by Netflix, who arranged with the Prince Estate to grant Edelman unprecedented access to the groundbreaking musician’s legendary vault of unreleased material.

However, the Prince Estate were reportedly unhappy with the portrayal of Prince that emerged in Edelman’s film.

In a statement to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Netflix said: “The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive.

“As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released.”………

Prince was a musical genius. Prince was a cultural force. But I think there’s already ample evidence that Prince was forked up.

But I get it - they're not saying nobody has the right the present Prince in any way, they’re saying that they’re not going to allow use of exclusive content that the estate controls to be used in a way that they don’t agree with.

It’s certainly ironic that the estate of an artist who was challenging to social norms would take such a restrictive position but that’s their prerogative. They aren’t the artists, they’re the financial beneficiaries.

I used to work with a guy who had, at one time, been Prince’s head of security.. it’s been a long time, so i dont remember too many details.. the only two things stick out in my mind are that the guy said Prince played basketball every day with his security detail and his friends (which in some cases was a blurry line) and that, for a guy who only stood 5’3”- Prince was an exceptional hooper…. The other thing i remember, when i asked some question about groupies or something- the guy just laughed, shook his head and said ‘Dude, you wouldn’t even believe’.. he said they’d be staying in a hotel somewhere , Prince would get done with one woman, send her on her way down the elevator - and at the same time, another woman would be on her way up on a different elevator to see him.. he said this happened constantly .

So in other words- other than his obvious tremendous talent- his life didnt seem all that different than what i imagine most rock star’s lives to be like .
