Prince, looking at his body of work (especially live performances) was a sui generis on the guitar ... but I'll throw this out:
Let's say that Van Halen was getting ready to kick off the tour to support the 1984 album ... but then something befell Eddie Van Halen and he suddenly was going to be unavailable to tour. However, the other three guys in Van Halen, with EVH's blessing, are determined to find a way to go forward with the tour. Hiring on a replacement guitarist is necessary.
Prince was one of the very small group of guitarists who could have credibly stepped in for EVH in a situation like this. It would have been different from EVH's tone, of course, but the requisite technique. hand speed and musicality were all there in Prince's playing. As a bonus, Prince could ALSO have played any of Eddie's keyboard parts. The Van Halen crowds would've gotten their money's worth and then some.
- Musician: Prince wrote most of his songs on the piano which he began playing as a young child, but he was a brilliant guitarist - the kind of guitarists that other guitarists often say is one of their favorite or most impressive. On a stage of other musicians at the R&RHOF induction of George Harrison, Prince's delivered one of the most memorable live guitar solos people still talk about. Billy Gibbons described Prince's guitar playing as "sensational - otherworldly"
And in case anyone didn't see Prince's response to this skit ...can't believe you hadn't seen this
I stand by the opinion, and would disagree about that type of music not being his thing. Prince played a ton of hard-rock guitar all throughout his career of live performances. He was known for throwing in mind-blowing rock guitar showcases during his live sets -- many covers and many originals, as well. While Prince is a fine guitar player I think above is a bit of an exaggeration, to be fair to Prince, VH type of music was not his thing.....
And the notion that Prince was a better guitar player than Jimi Hendrix (who changed the way folks looked at guitar playing) is just.....ridiculous....
Yep, I thought so as well. He had some nice hits after that period, but it's not the same to me.Wish he would’ve stuck with Wendy & Lisa for a couple more albums. That was peak Prince imo

I might have missed a post, but no one here said that.
Technical capability was what I was addressing, so we're really not arguing here. With regards to Prince playing VH, I've never seen him do anything resembling EVH.....was he technically capable? Maybe, but in truth there are much faster, more technical players than EVH.....

You're right about the faster/more-technical players than EVH being out there. I didn't want to throw out a list of credible emergency EVH stand-ins in a Prince thread -- but, yes, there were/are others. And not all of them are rock players.
