Netflix axes controversial nine-hour Prince documentary (1 Viewer)

I have heard people say this, but I do not understand it. He wrote some good songs. Genius?

Certainly you can understand that this concept is highly subjective and ultimately what we are talking about is likely semantic. But I think that in order to pass a judgment like this, one must first be familiar with the entire body of work and, two, have the trained perspective to identify genius in these disciplines.

I am neither but I do know that summarizing Prince as "wrote a few good songs" is a dramatic understatement. Prince is often noted as one of the most complete and accomplished artists of his time:

- Musician: Prince wrote most of his songs on the piano which he began playing as a young child, but he was a brilliant guitarist - the kind of guitarists that other guitarists often say is one of their favorite or most impressive. On a stage of other musicians at the R&RHOF induction of George Harrison, Prince's delivered one of the most memorable live guitar solos people still talk about. Billy Gibbons described Prince's guitar playing as "sensational - otherworldly"
- Songwriter: Prince is said to have written between 500 and 1,000 songs. He recorded 39 albums and sold over 150 million. Prince had a handful of #1s, a dozen or more top 10s, and some he wrote of the most memorable songs of the 80s for others (Nothing Compares 2U, I Feel for You - Chaka Khan, Manic Monday, etc.)
- Producer: Prince produced his own music from very early on and throughout his entire career. Much of his breakthrough quality as a club music artist early on and then as a mainstream artist is owed to his skill and inventiveness as a producer. He even produced George Clinton records, that's saying something.
- Cultural force: Prince was unique throughout his career. He didn't really have a genre and within the genres that he was associated with he always had his own unique space. He had a unique fashion throughout his career that was often emulated. He had a stage presence, could dance and then deliver an epic guitar solo all in the same series of moments. Purple Rain was an entire cultural movement that has no pier except Hard Days Night. He won numerous Grammies but he also won two Oscars for music in a film. Purple Rain is in the significant film registry at the Library of Congress.

Do those things make him a genius? I don't think that's a controversial claim - though again, it's so subjective and depends on what makes a genius. I dunno.

One thing I read commenting on Prince

Basically this:

Everyone agrees that there is a point (usually mid to late 90s) where Prince albums stopped being start to finish great

But everyone agrees that every album released after that point has at least a song or two on it that is as good as anything he's ever done

But everyone disagrees on what those 1 or 2 songs are

Wish he would’ve stuck with Wendy & Lisa for a couple more albums. That was peak Prince imo

Am I remembering something wrong or didn't we first have this happen with Kevin Smith? Like Prince hired him (while Prince was alive) to do a documentary and after it was done, it just got shoved into a vault with the multitude of unreleased sheet that is in there? I think I remember Kevin relaying a story about it all.

It’s subjective but also an absolute fact

ew
Glad that never happened

I used to work with a guy who had, at one time, been Prince’s head of security.. it’s been a long time, so i dont remember too many details.. the only two things stick out in my mind are that the guy said Prince played basketball every day with his security detail and his friends (which in some cases was a blurry line) and that, for a guy who only stood 5’3”- Prince was an exceptional hooper….

psshhhhhh - you watched the Chappelle show. ( Charlie Murphys True Hollywood stories )

lol

... highly subjective ...
Yep. I never liked his songs very much. Certainly not a top-ten guitar player of the 80s compared to Clapton, Van Halen, etc. He was more popular for his personality/look than his music. I think he was famous because he had a unique queer/sensitive look slightly before that was cool. Just "one of those weird 80s guys" to me.

"He could play lots of instruments" people say. Wow. Lots of people can do that.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

Sure, you can dismiss virtually anyone if you reduce their qualities to a couple of trivial bulletpoints.

Have whatever taste you want
You lose the point when you try to explain why others don’t feel the same as you

Yep. Looks like he was approached for this documentary as well. That’s two that he’s been involved in to be shelved now 😂

I'm mostly not a huge fan of his music, nor of most pop music but the guy was definitely a genius......I doesn't matter the genre (and he does cross them in his music, often) anyone that can write great songs (he has wrote many that others had hits with), play all the instruments, produce, etc.....is a genius in my book.....

Certainly not a top-ten guitar player of the 80s compared to Clapton, Van Halen, etc.
Prince, looking at his body of work (especially live performances) was a sui generis on the guitar ... but I'll throw this out:

Let's say that Van Halen was getting ready to kick off the tour to support the 1984 album ... but then something befell Eddie Van Halen and he suddenly was going to be unavailable to tour. However, the other three guys in Van Halen, with EVH's blessing, are determined to find a way to go forward with the tour. Hiring on a replacement guitarist is necessary.

Prince was one of the very small group of guitarists who could have credibly stepped in for EVH in a situation like this. It would have been different from EVH's tone, of course, but the requisite technique. hand speed and musicality were all there in Prince's playing. As a bonus, Prince could ALSO have played any of Eddie's keyboard parts. The Van Halen crowds would've gotten their money's worth and then some.
