Pass Interference Penalties (1 Viewer)

The OPs point is that the likelihood of DPI would be greater than a 100 yard KO return.

It’s not about a sure thing, it’s about taking a 5% chance over 1%.
My point is why interfere? there is 2 seconds on the clock and the Saints have no time outs. I can see if it were a hail mary situation. But with that much field and that little amount of time. I tell my dbs let him catch it and make the tackle.

Dude nobody intends to interfere. Lol. It was a better desperation move than trying to run a KO back.

Good day to you.

That DPI near the end is almost to a point where a fine should be levied for flopping. It sure a good flop to look like the defender committed PI when in truth he never even really touched him.

But I wanted to start a topic on what is people's opinion with False starts? It seems to be out of control in both college and pros. You see almost no movement on the line and then oooops, flag. The defense can twitch but the offense can't. I literally watch Cal get screwed over by the refs vs Florida St last week where I kid you not their had to been 10 false start penalties called on Cal everytime they set foot in the red zone. Most of it looked like nothing.

What I wonder is, would Adebo's penalty today be of the "spot foul" variety or a 15 yarder? I would say the ref's would have ruled Spot Foul, and the result (for us) would be the same.
Instant replay if it was still around would of yielded no penalty. If someone has better camera angle to show it was PI I'd like to see it, looked more like a WR flop to me.

I hate spot fouls that literally determine the outcome of a game. Happens way too often. 15 yards is enough of a punishment for contacting a player down the field.
Yeh, I agree.

Brutal penalty in the rule book. Wish they would at least consider "tweaking" this to auto 15 yards. Heck, how about 20 yards?

Spot fouls are THE worst. Especially late in games. Geesh.

It's been the same way forever. DBs need to stop freaking holding
They’re doing everything the receiver does but playing backwards. The league needs to lighten up the idea of PI but they won’t because scores bring views.

As far as rule change goes, I don’t agree with it at all. The 15 yard only foul makes sense in college because there’s clear separation on most plays, in the NFL if coverage isn’t completely broken then everything is contested. The only solution I can possibly see is still subjective enough that I’m not sure it matters. You can have different versions of PI where im obvious PI is a spot foul and the “bang bang” kind of plays are just 15 yards. Likely both would result in automatic 1st downs which is a killer in and of itself.
Not to mention it would be the same refs deciding what’s obvious and what’s not.

It gives too much power to the ref. The refs should have the least amount of influence as possible.

I was watching the Fox post game show on TV a little bit ago. The crew was talking about how crazy some of these pass interference penalties can be. They can easily be a 30-50 yard penalty.

When teams are losing, they throw deep knowing if they don’t complete the pass they may well gain a penalty, and in many cases that will flip the game.

Jimmy Johnson in particular said it’s ridiculous and NFL should consider the college rule limiting the penalty to 15 yards.

Forget that it happened to the Saints today, but what’s your opinion on this type of rule change?
I said the exact same thing after that game. In a flag-happy league why not toss up a gaimary and wait for the 50/50 call? Now don't get me wrong, Adebo was guilty... But if that was just a 15 yard penalty we may be talking about a different outcome.

Rule needs to change.

I honestly would even prefer if there was a degree of penalty similar to the way face mask used to be.

Inadvertent in fighting for the ball with tight coverage - 15 yds.

Intentional to prevent a long gain or TD - spot foul.

Sure it opens it up to interpretation by the refs - but they already kind of do that anyway.
I was going to post that very same thing. I think the only reason it's not that way is the league WANTS it a ref judgement call so they can control the narrative to determine the outcome. Not to say that today's call was like that, but I'll go to my grave believing that our no-call in the NFC championship game was influenced by the league

The only reason we hate the rule is because it is one that continually goes against the Saints and it has cost us so many potential victories. If our defenders could learn to play the ball and not get beaten on those deep routes, then we could accept the rule as it is.
Sorry the rule is bad and has always been. Too much of a penalty for a ref's judgement call. There should be 2 degrees of DPI, DPI being 15 yds and automatic 1st and intentional DPI with that being a spot foul with auto 1st.
