Pastor to Die in Iran for being a Christian (1 Viewer)

But isn't this case just as much a human rights issue then a Iranian pastor refusing to renouce his beliefs against hardline fundamentalists who claim he was born Muslim, so far failed to provide substantial evidence backing this. Refusing to compromise one's beliefs/principles, in most respects, is honorable, if not respectable even for strident cynics. Not comparable per say, but would most have criticized, mocked Christians rounded up, tortured, burned on stakes in coliseums as Nero's scapegoats. Or Jews faced centuries of pogroms, constantly displaced, racial/Social Darwinist myths for murdering Christ.

Of course, beliefs that are destructive, are coersive and indoctrinate masses into genocide, ethnic cleansing of cultures, races are horrific crimes of worst types. Very few disagree there, but juxtaposing what/or how we react differently to these situations is superficial. Its convenient for me to argue whether mans' is ultimately more foolish then brave, but this isn't as objective reality as there rarely comparable, and I'm honest enough to not assume I know how I'd react faced with grave life-or-death situations. I can't, in fact more people probably can't despite how much some believe they'd might go about handling it.

But is that atheist observer speaking, anti? This doesn't any of us and most Americans. This thread turned from man facing possibly execution for his religious beliefs to criticizing, deriding him that not renouncing means he's abandoning his wife, kids. As if we could've handle differently, which hopefully, this country never unravels to point some would confront situations and make decisions with life, family, reputation on line. I can't say I face it differently, or break under pressure. This thread had lot of informative, objective posts but it ends there, because we can't forget what this really about, possible human rights violation in a nation that's executed gays, lesbians, outspoken critics, petty criminals, harassed, jailed, fined professors, scientists questioned clerical authority over religious, scientific claims.

This case is just one of many in a country where dogmatic theocracy trumps reason, logic, and unfortunate for Iranians who suffered under brutal autocrat and Savak for 34 years,

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
and drinking largely sobers us again.

Iran’s supreme leader to rule on Christian pastor’s case
By Jordan Sekulow

Breaking news reports out of Iran provide that the state court of Gilan, which recently demanded that Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani recant his faith or face execution, has delayed its written decision. As we predicted last week, the judges have sent the case to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. According to Youcef’s lawyer, Mohammad Ali Dadkhah, “the court has decided to ask the opinion of Mr. (Ali) Khamenei.” Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei is an Islamic jurist and the final arbiter of questions of Sharia law. In Iran, he is seen as a guardian protecting Iran.

The step to involve the most powerful leader in Iran demonstrates that Iran is feeling the pressure. Involving the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in a case before a regional court is unusual. We can be certain if the lies spread by Iran were true – that Youcef was instead convicted of rape, extortion, and Zionism – the court would not seek the advice of the Supreme Ayatollah.

what about "renouncing" him to save your skin and continue to be able to raise your kids??

i put renouncing in quotes because, well, you can "renounce" jesus to someone and still not actually renounce jesus

little white lies and all....i am sure jesus would understand

I understand DesertKajun. I'm not sure if I could do it, but I sure hope I would!!! Jesus was not all sunshine and roses. Jesus could sometimes use harsh words and clear and short messages. He could use such harsh words that lots of his followers left him. Remember he had only twelve apostels in the end following him. The teachings are clear and decisive. There is no compromise, there's no common denominator, and no "deal" to be made with God.
Put him first, and make him your first choice is the teaching you can find in the bible.

Here's what Matthew chapter 10 says, and it doesn't surprise me

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

I hope I would be able to do the same also.

This guy is putting his life in danger for something very near and dear to him and has faith to believe GOD will take care of the rest. We all have put our lives in danger (therefore probably leaving your kids behind) for simple pleasures in this life, atleast this is for a great purpose. How messed up would this world be if many men did not do the same for great purposes......Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela

Haven't you ever heard Jesus call the "Prince of War"? They shall know we are Christians by our body count? Go in conflict to maim and slay others?

It's funny how some have made up their minds that all this guy has to do is tell them what they want to hear and then he can go about living his life how he chooses, according to his beliefs.

What's funnier? That or those who think God is going to magically take care of his kids after his death?

as an atheist, if i lived in a country where i could be put do death for renouncing the magic man in the sky, i would just keep my mouth shut about my beliefs.....

Well yeah, that's exactly what I would expect. But this guy is not an atheist.
