He was Mike Nolan’s assistant LB coach before Nolan left. I’m sure a big part of his learning came from there.

Its not splitting hairs, you don't learn defensive concepts from an offensive coach, its DA's defense that is making his defensive staff members attractive to other teams.

In that case pretty much none of the people Payton gets credit for are a part of his coaching tree since they were all other places prior to here. Dan Campbell was in Miami for six years.

This thread took six posts before someone posted a critical remark about Dennis Allen that came out of left field. I think the typical average for the SSF is somewhere around 1.8 posts. Great work, folks.

I mean, Mike Nolan was the Saints linebackers coach and has a history of coaching linebackers that goes all the way back to 1983, but if some branches of a tree mean something more to you than that, then have at it. I don't personally care about the coaching tree as much as who coaches have worked directly with and been influenced by. I doubt Hodges spent a lot of time with Payton strategizing linebacker play during their time on the same staff.

True, but at the end of the day Hodges will run a variation of DA’s defense just like the Falcons do. DA’s scheme is coveted and his coaching tree is growing.

That is a smart move by Mayo, our LB coach has been underrated for a while. He’s had very good success with the LBs since taking over after Mike Nolan left.

Doesn't matter. Unless the head coach as some success, no one cares if he has a "tree."

it's bizarre how the rest of the league doesn't know the Saints org - top to bottom - is a toxic dump of reverse midas touches
they'll learn soon enough i suppose
