Payton and Belichick are looking like geniuses for getting rid of Brandin Cooks (2 Viewers)

Cooks is Exhibit A when you are trying to explain to someone the difference between very good and great.

Neither the Saints nor the Pats were willing to give him "great" money, but the Rams were. People say the Rams are the team on the rise and not the Saints, but I see the youngest very good defense in the NFL, Thomas, Kamara and an OL under contract, with Brees and Unger the ONLY starters not still under 30 right now, and I beg to differ.

We are the danger.

Cooks had 2tds scored if Goff throws 2 better balls(although Gilmore was holding his left arm the whole way)...not sure Cooks is as much a slouch as this thread makes him seem.

Agree that Cooks, who was the Rams' lone weapon in the Super Bowl is very good, but not great. His speed has to be respected. And in the Rams' offense, he fits a special need.

Cooks is a good receiver, there's no denying that.
If Drew was 5 years younger and/or he had kept his mouth shut he might have stayed a saint a bit longer.

Payton couldn't afford to have a deep threat that wants the ball in this offense when the deep passes were slowly being taken out of the playbook.
Much better to have a cheaper option like Ginn who is happy to run those decoy routes, but can still do whatever else he's needed for.

Cooks has elite speed, hands, jump, and ball tracking... all deep ball speed flanker traits. He doesnt even register as fair on route running, catch in traffic, power, quick separation or vision for YAC.

Hes a one trick pony who is the best wr in the league at that one trick. But he didnt fit our offense going forward as we have an aging QB. We would have needed him to also be a threat on short and intermediate routes as well as gadget run plays for him to be worth anywhere near the money he is getting if it was from us.

Ginn isnt quite the deep threat cooks is, but he is close enough. But Ginn provides all those other qualities. I dont get the hate on cooks, he is what he is. It's just that what he is, is worth more to other teams than it would be for us. Still a great player, just too one dimensional for how our offense operates these days.
