Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler to merge (2 Viewers)

I was thinking cars but yes....truck and Jeep market has a ton of loyalty. As far as quality I just have 2 words......death wobble. Has plagued jeeps and solid axle trucks for years and FCA has just let it keep going. Same can be said for the truck trans. in the HD trucks but at least they've tried to address the weak trannies somewhat.

Death wobble is only a problem with poor mods or worn stock Jeep's.

It is usually worn suspension parts. Easy fix but never done before it gets that bad.

The fact that all of the auto industry took grease fitting out of suspension and drive line parts twenty years ago has more to do with it than anything else.

Death wobble means the mods you did threw it out of wack or you need to maintain you vehicle plain and simple.

While this is true, it brings up one of the world's greatest mysteries. Why?

If you have to ask... then you’re probably not cut out to own one.

I dont have a Jeep currently (well, not a real Jeep)- but i totally get it.. and i’m planning to soon get a used Rubicon to play around in on the weekends.. also eventually want to get an older Grand Wagoneer, though the prices for those things are already in the stratosphere.

As for your question, i truly dont know how to answer it.. maybe it’s the fun factor , or maybe because Jeeps are unlike anything else on the road(?) i dont know, but i like it.

I'm not so sure that there is much loyalty for the Dodge trucks. The primary factor for most people I know that have them was price. Dodge is almost always significantly cheaper than Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc. I do like the way they looked the last decade, but I would never buy one because they are cheap ****. Same goes for the Challenger. It by far is the coolest looking car out of the Mustang, Camaro, etc, but I would never buy one unless it was one of the high end models (meaning I would never buy one).

This is the answer.

There are almost 200 SUV models available in the USA. Of those, many look and perform exactly the same.

There is one Jeep Wrangler. They have no competition and have taken advantage and dominate a niche market.

Dodge trucks aren't terrible. I currently own one haha. First non-GM truck I've owned. It's a 1 ton megacab. The cab is why I bought it....family of 5 that travels with a 5th wheel all summer. We needed the room. Had a Duramax before this one. Miss my Duramax but I can't say I hate this Dodge.

I love waggies. But I would rather the sj Cherokee.

Here is one for you to drool over. You are right they are stupid expensive.

That one is a dream.

I don't know where you are but everything I find is rotten in South la or crazy priced.

I have played with Jeep's when they use to be cheap. Now every dog is even expensive. Had an old cj7 before Katrina it was a hoot.

You would assume the market would dry up eventually but it never seems to.

Last I heard the regular two door ones don't move fast anymore and you can get deal new.

With the way Jeep's hold value new makes sense.

Not till next year.

The bronco we have been hearing about for what seems forever is due out spring next year.

Ha, i actually noticed that one on BAT yesterday! Very nice.. my personal preference is the Grand Wag ‘87-‘91, but the one you posted above is going to bring ALL the money.

I’m in Texas, and yeah, like you said, prices are super high for all but the most ragged-out ones.. funny you mentioned that 2 doors are selling slower; that’s good news for me since i’m kind of a purist, and i dont care for the 4 door Wrangler/Rubicons.. still, going to probably have to shell out around $15k for a 10 or 12 yr old Rubicon when i decide to pull the trigger.. but i’ll plan on keeping it forever.

Yeah that one is go for stupid money.

Yeah Brooks Stevens was a god in design. Invented a whole class of vehicles that we can't get enough of now. People don't realize how huge he was.

I am on the fence with what is my favorite Stevens design either the wagoneer or the Wienermobile.

Good luck finding a good wagoneer

Then that number will grow to 2. Still a far cry from the SUV, truck or car market.

I was a little surprised when I heard about the PSA/FCA merger. IMO, as much as I like FCA, they are in trouble with anything that is not Jeep or Ram. PSA could have just waited this out and bought them outright for a bargain.

However Peugeot note has their market opening into the US. I suspect we’ll see Peugeots rebadged as Chryslers in less than two years. Chrysler and Dodge are starved for new products.

The big loser in this may be the Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands. FCA has already killed a few Alfa product this week. There has been talk of Fiat leaving the US market.

Jeep and Ram, I think, will largely be unaffected. They have several new products in the pipeline and the existing products are doing well. A new Grand Cherokee and Wagoner are coming and the new Ram pickup has been a hit. There are plans for a new Dakota truck too.

BTW, anyone talking about bad Peugeot quality hasn’t been paying attention. They’ve made serious improvements in the last twenty years.

I agree it is gonna be a badge engineer job.

What flies over most consumers heads are how much they do that already. The new Supra is a BMW from top to bottom. Total badge job. The Fiat 124 Spyder is a Miata made by Mazda with Fiats engine installed.

The big thing is companies share platforms with a different skin all the time.

That is what the merger is all about. Saving funds in platform development.

The problem with Fiats is they loose value like nothing else on the market.

I tell you that little Fiat arbarth 500 is a fun little car.

If you get a chance to drive one do. They sound great. Tiny little gocart feel they are a hoot.

They dropped like a rock in value. Most people had them as a toy so you find them with low mileage all day long cheap.

The problem Fiat has with this market is Americans over buy vehicles. Buy huge ones they can't afford and spread it out over 78 months. If Americans were logical and bought the size they need daily and rented when they needed a third row of seats small cars would sell fine.

How many times do you see a suburban with one person in it?

The bronco we have been hearing about for what seems forever is due out spring next year.

My understanding is the "Baby Bronco" (the unibody, Ford Escape based version) will be out next spring.

The body on frame Ranger based Bronco that will compete with the Wrangler is estimated to be out the following year in 2021 (if ever, given how long we've been waiting for it).

Last week Ford said the Bronco would be unveiled spring 2020. However, the Bronco R Baja racer was just unveiled. It's believed the body is derived from the production big Bronco.. I like what I'm seeing..

The biggest problem with Chrysler and Peugeot is that other people are still making cars. Few people go shopping for a Chrysler but lots shop specifically for honda, Toyota, ECT ECT. No one buys a Chrysler.....they end up in one

I don’t think that’s true. Chrysler is the only domestic participant in mini-vans and they’re number 1 when you combine sales of the various models. Challenger sales have grown every year for four years in a row and Charger’s muscle car feel in a four-door car is strong in the US market.
