PFT Rumor-Raiders MAY lift tag from Asomugha (1 Viewer)

If he becomes a FA and we do not make a strong run at him regaudless of the price I will be so ****** it is not to often you get a chance to get a top CB twice in one season. (I am referring to Asante)

Why would Tampa, a cover-2 team, want to pay that kind of money for a man corner?

Exactly!!! The anaylists on all of the major shows told me he would be perfect for our system. Tampa cover 2 teams rely on big corners that play lots of zone and even act as the S in run support. He is a cover corner, better than MM, and would absolutely be exactly what we need. I hope it happens, and I am sure we jump on him if it does.

I think we need to do everything in our power to grab Asomugha. I'd offer the Raiders either:

This year's 2nd and 5th....they are cash strapped and there's no way they can afford to sign two top 10 picks.

OR....

Next year's first and this year's fifth.

We definitely have the money to sign him this year...AND...provide atleast two of next year's potential FAs (Smith, Evans, Colston, Vilma) a contract this year. The money we have left is for FAs. I believe that money left over already accounts for the money required to sign our draft picks this year. He would probably get a deal of the same caliber as Samuel, which really is cap friendly for the next two years...which I wouldn't mind one bit.

We'd have McKenzie, Young, David, Gay, Craft, and Asomugha on the roster. This would give us an excellent secondary no matter how McKenzie's health is. I think the FO will take a hard look at his health and that will ultimately be the determining factor if we decide to go after him. Also, if we did snag him....I'd look for us to cut Duece after June 1st to spread the cap hit and also look for us to snag Rivers at 10 if Dorsey/Ellis are gone. Or even Gholston if he's there and let Smith walk next year.

Even if he becomes a FA the Saints will more than likely NOT try to sign him. They didn't want to spend big money on a single player throughout the FA period... I doubt they'll spend money on Asomugha... but we can always dream...

I disagree. We did so with Brees becuase he was a perfect fit for what Payton does on offense. No other defensive free agent fits that bill, therefore no other would be worth it, but this corner does, and is. Even the Patriots have paid big when a free agent that really fits what they do has come available. I don't think we are cheap, and I do not believe we would be unwise to make such a move. I believe at corner, it would be the best move we have ever made, to be quite frank, and will be worth every penny becuase he fits what we do so well.

If the Raiders lift the tag, there is no need to offer any trade compensation. They lose the right to trade him if he becomes a free agent, unless he would have been restricted before recieving the tag.

Asante is nowhere near the corner that asomugha is. not that asnte is bad, but asomugha is amazing

DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELVES!!!

As much as I would love it, and we do have the CAP space, this FA has proven that he is the type of player we will not go after. We like to pay our guys lots of money when they perform but we don't like to pay other teams players the cash. Just let it go.

And don't bother with the 'we don't have enough CAP space' guys. When pressed with questions like, 'why do articles still have us with the second most in the league?', 'how much will the CAP space increase next year?', or even 'do you REALLY think the rookie pool is that much?' they don't come back with answers.

Ok, I know none of us really watch Raiders games, and I know that he is a good man corner, but where did he get his billing as the best man corner, better than Champ as one poster stated? This is an honest question, because I know he had a great 2006 year, but has anyone looked at his other years? I doubt it's because they don't target him (for 2004 and 2005 anyway, maybe they didn't in 2007). I do think he'd fit our system perfectly, but I'd love to know besides 2006 how he got his billing.

I do agree with you, but the Raiders have proven themselves to make a life a living hell for any player that tries to cross them. Also, I highly doubt the Raiders want to give any of their division rivals the slightest chance of having to go up against Asomugha twice a year. I look for them to try and work some sort of deal. Remember, there is no RULE saying that a team has to give up two #1's....it's just a rule of thumb. It's whatever the two teams in question agree upon, since he is "franchised."

Again, I can't see the Raiders just lifting the tag and letting him walk. They have too much ego and have always been the team to make their players pay the price for not toting the Raiderr Company Line. Al Davis would ship him off to Japan for an 8th rounder if he thought if would make his ex-player's life hell. He always wants to set an example to others of being someone not to mess with.

We've already spent a considerable amount of money this year. Far more then people seem to realize. And we still have deals like Colston, Evans, and Smith left. There are too many teams with much more cap space who haven't done much of anything this year in Free Agency.

To add to that we traded for a MLB in the last year of his deal. So a deal for Vilma is in the near future also (assuming he is fully recovered). On top of that the Saints have signed two CB's in consecutive years for almost 35 million in total contracts with over 10 million gauranteed to those to players. I don't see the Saints jumping the gun to sign Asomugha (even though he might be worth it) to a deal with over 20 million gauranteed and then having to give another 20 some odd million each to Evans, Colston, Smith and Vilma. Then on top of that still having to pay the #10 overall pick.

He wouldn't cost as much as people are acting like he will, no team has the money to give out a HUGE contract to him. The bidding war wouldn't be with big numbers, he will get a very nice contract, but not a contract that he would have gotten at the begining of FA.

Hall, for that matter, is an addition, not a substitution.

That's what I was thinking until I saw their cap situation. They can't afford to keep all of them. They are going to have to do something. I doubt they untag him, but I can see them trading him away.
