I just don't see the point in having Toon and Morgan wallo in obscurity as 5th and 6th recievers and I don't see the Saints keeping Meachem as a 5th or 6th recievers which to me makes Coleman and the Saints willingness to develop him as the perfect 6th recievers and our top recievers already being Colston, Still and Cooks why would we keep Meachem? Not s nlknock against him but I think when the Saints make these final decisions that plays a factor we are obviously in a youth movement and Graham is a huge part of this offense we so the case for Meachem "experience" goes out the window as he was never a bigger option than 3rd or 4th in our offense which obvious have been taken by Stills and Cooks (Colston and Morgan being the first two options on offense).

You ask Why would you keep meachum? After colston, how many regular season football games do the rest have combined? With out stlls I think it's one. And Stills is hurt right now. You don't put Brees in that position. You need to balance your receivers with young and experience. People Brees can trust. Coleman? Toon? No way. And graham is a TE who we can't afford to have Brees have to key on to move the ball

Top 6 - beach starts season as a healthy scratch to see how Toon does with live bullets
If toon does ok meach is dropped for midseason depth (LB or DB)
Jones to PS

You don't out together a "what if" kind of roster...Coleman will be inactive on game days that's why its a good spot for him to develop and eventually contribute...Colston, Stills, Cooks, Morgan and Toon will be active on game days. Stills has a quad yes being rested to prepare for the season not to eventually play in a preseason game.

Colston, Graham, Watson, PT bring a veteran or sense to the offensive skill positions...I think we are putting to much stock in "experience" co side ring the roll Stills had last year and Cooks will have this year.

IMHO, Toon already missed a year of development because we brought back Meachem last year. Meachem had 14 catches for San Diego in 2012, so they cut him at great expense to their cap. Most were sure it was because SD didn't know how to use him like we did, and they didn't have a QB like Brees that was familiar with him and trusted him.

So, how did that work out for us and for Meachem? Back here with the familiarity and trust working for him, and a QB that hits anyone that can get open, he upped his total catches on the year to 16! I bet San Diego is still kicking themselves over their stupid mistake.

You don't need to waste a roster spot on a guy like that. Cut him and he'll be sitting at home waiting on a call if someone gets hurt later in the year. None of the other teams in the NFL wants a 30 year old receiver with numbers like that, that even after all this time in the league still can't catch with his hands. Did you see the pass in the end zone that bounced off his shoulder pads last night? We've seen that for years from Meachem, and I don't think with him turning 30 in Sept. that he's going to correct it.

Neither will he correct the fact that he disappears in games, despite supporters claiming he can still take the top off a defense. I tend to think the reason he's rarely targeted is because he's rarely open....but maybe I'm wrong. I'm interested in hearing your theory about why two of the better QB's in the NFL rarely threw to a guy that "can still take the top off a defense and catches everything thrown to him". What do you see that I'm not seeing?

Because Meach is not a number one receiver never has been. The saints new know how to use him. Like I said in another thread. I think Meach makes the team and is good for 20 catches for 300 yards and 3 TD. And I will say that on a team that throws like we do, and you have Colston, Stills, Graham, Cooks, PT, Watson, and KR in front of you, I don't know what you are expecting anyway. There are only so many balls to go around. We don't need Meach to catch 60 for 750 and 5 TD. Your number 4 WR on saints can't do that. You can't have 10 guys average 50 catches and 900 yards with 8 TDs. It's impossible. Brees threw for 5000 yards. Did that last receiver hurt his stats? But what Meach did have was knowledge of the O and make the catches when it counted. Toon and Coleman haven't done that at all.

I'm not sure what you guys think a 4th/5th WR is supposed to produce.

Yeah, Meachem only caught 16 passes for 320 yards and 2 TDs but that's about what any team expects from a bottom of the depth chart WR. Meachem was also an asset pulling safties and blocking.

Whoever the 4th/5th WRs end up being, don't expect a 500-600 yard season from them. Morgan would be the exception because he's such a deep threat.

If Coleman doesn't make it to practice squad...oh well. Who cares? He doesn't look good anyway. He is a Tarzan/Jane player. And there is a place for players like him...practice squad. I highly doubt that any NFL team would assign him to their active roster after all of the game footage on him. He is not even close to be ready to contribute. I would rather have Jones personally.

For those choosing Coleman to the final 53,

what have you seen besides his height that's makes him an asset to this team?

And if height is such a significant asset...then why isn't the NFL filled with 6'6" WRs? It's because 6'6" guys aren't usually fluid. They are stiff...lack acceleration and agility. Coleman falls right in line. In fact...I would probably struggle to count on one hand how many fluid 6'6" receivers I have seen in my 15 years of watching football. Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski may be the only two.

SR Saints Player Expectations / Job Requirements

Job: 4th/5h WR on New Orleans Saints Roster

Recommended (minimum): 50 rec 1200 yards 10 TD's annually

Desirable: 80 rec 1500 yards 15 TD's by week 8

:hihi:

I heard Bobby on the Radio before the game make the statement that the last time we kept 6 WR's was when Courtney Roby was out Special Teams ace. We will not keep 6 WR if one is not great on ST and as of right now that seems to lean towards keeping extra safeties not WR's

Sorry but Mech does not make it this year. If we keep six I have a feeling that we will only keep three RB's then with Cadet getting the ax.

it is a matter of if we have another offensive player that is better then Cadet on ST!

We may only keep 5, but if we do Meachem could still make it as the 5th.

Right now, I think the picture has become much clearer. Joe Morgan is making this team. So we know the top 4.

With Toon so far doing nothing in preseason of note, Meachem could be the 5th if the coaches feel more comfortable with what they know he'll give them vs. a developmental player.

Could Toon make the PS, no play in 2012, PFF has 8 games he played in for 2013.

Last year, we kept 5 RBs: Sproles, PT, MI, K Rob and Cadet. And if you dont remember what happened to us at RB in 2010, let me assure you, we wont go with only 3 RBs this year...or ever again!

Cadet knows the system and can play RB. But he can also play STs, and thats his bigger value. IMO, he stays.
