This got little to no discussion in the media but the way that the Lions and the Buccaneers played out the final moments of the game were poor management of the clock by both teams.

The Lions risked losing. The Bucs thwarted any chance of winning.

An article from NBC Sports that appeared on MSN.COM outlined the mistakes made by each team in the waning moments of the game. Excerpts Below:

When the Lions intercepted a pass with 1:33 left in the game, the Buccaneers still had one timeout.

That meant that even if the Lions had used the full 40 seconds between kneel downs, they couldn't have run the clock all the way down — as long as the Bucs used their timeout.

The Lions knelt down anyway and didn't even take the full 40 seconds off the clock between kneel downs. But the Bucs never used their final timeout. When Lions quarterback Jared Goff knelt down for the third and final time, 36 seconds were on the clock and the Bucs still had their timeout. It was fourth down, which meant that if the Bucs had called their timeout, the Lions likely would have attempted a 49-yard field goal.

If that field goal had missed, the Buccaneers would have had the ball at their own 39-yard line with about 30 seconds left, needing to drive 61 yards for a touchdown and then score a two-point conversion to force overtime.

I didn’t watch any of this game so this is news to me. Sounds very bad on the Bucs!

I feel like there was a gentleman’s agreement between the 2 coaches. If Detroit would have taken a knee with 1 second left every time, I think there would have been 5-10 seconds left at the end. Assuming Tampa took their timeout! Still a chance but not really!

Is this the reason why reporters were asking Bowles about it? The game was basically over when Baker threw the pick, it was a Hail Mary situation, in my view, not bad clock management.

Agreed. The lions knew Bucs weren't gonna call the timeout, so they jusy kneeled it whenever. If a Bucs player decided to call the timeout when the lions kneeled it the last time, the media would have said the players had no respect for the coach and he lost the locker room..lol

Tampa not taking the timeout at the end really was mind-blowing. It's the PLAYOFFS.

That's the sort of thing that should get a head coach fired. It's like he willfully ended his team's season when he had the opportunity to at least get a couple of shots at the end zone if the FG is missed.

Even if it was a "Gentlemen's agreement," in that situation, I would not have been a gentleman. Fight me after the game if you'd like.

Reminds me of a game of Madden I played back in college. Me and another guy in my athletics dorm were pretty much known as the top 2 Madden players on campus (at least for our social bubble). We had many close games together but he could never beat me; I was the ultimate challenge.

One day he did get the edge on me and led by less than a touchdown with seconds to go, and he started kneeling the ball...in my head I knew the math would leave me with a second or two. Whole time him and his friend group were celebrating while I just kept my mouth shut as he kneeled the ball on fourth down, leaving me one second to go. The look on his face when he saw what just happened was priceless.

Moments later, a 40+ yard bomb to Alvin Harper for a touchdown happens, and I beat him once again, and me and my roommates celebrated like we just won a Super Bowl in real life. And I think that was the last time he ever played me.

The moral of the story...never turn down ANY chance. You never know what could happen with even just one second, and that's ESPECIALLY the case if you're playing against a cursed franchise like the Lions. :ROFLMAO:

Read it somewhere that Tampa used its last time out but then challenged the play and got their timeout back. I think both coaches thought Tampa was out of timeouts. Had Tampa called the timeout on first down Detroit still could have run the clock out....it's just that Detroit was snapping the ball with time still left on the clock and Tampa could have gotten the ball back had they called the timeout on third down. But, no coach is calling a timeout on third but not first down. Confusing situation but I think that's what happened.

Maybe you’re right, hail mary’s happen tho, so I’d have not given up and I’d have been upset had I been a fan of the team.

Why did he kneel with one second left. Just let the QB run for a few seconds and throw it out of bounds 😀

I think, I have been wrong before though, if Tampa would have taken a timeout on first down, the Lions would have run the ball down the middle to waste a few more seconds. And that probably would have done it!

I forgot the exact time specifics but I think he started kneeling on first down and I had a timeout left. I think he just did the math wrong or maybe didn’t do any math at all and didn’t realize he would run out of downs.

We almost never kneeled when playing each other but I think he figured he better do so to secure the win.

Yeah I didn’t watch any of it so you may be right, I’m just saying if there is even a second left that’s all it takes. As improbable as it is it’s happened many times over the years.

Hope you and yours are well Swede.
