PSA: Dining in Baton Rouge (2 Viewers)

Ruffino's is like an expensive Olive Garden. I'd much rather have Monjuni's; Rama was bad the one time I went; Superior Grill is good if you've never had real Mexican food; I've never been to the Roux House (I don't know why not); Walk-on's is where I take out-of-town people who want to go to Chili's; Riverside Patty makes a decent burger; Pastime makes horrible pizza, but a real good roast beef po-boy. Galatiore's is okay, but I'm not keen on dropping 420 for an oyster po-boy. It's terribly overpriced and I don't think that the food justifies the added cost. I think they're just ripping off Baton Rouge citizens with their name.

The rest are either chains or I've never visited, so I can't say. I can't stand behind any of these. I'm tempted to add Waka House for sushi, but I've only been there once. It was far and away the best sushi I have ever had though and I like that it was a small place.

I'm not a huge fan of Ruffino's but several folks I know swear by them. But to compare it to Olive Garden is harsh at best. Never had a bad meal at Rama. Where in BR are you going to get real mexican? Been to La Renya and it was borderline inedible. Only been to Walk-on's twice, but was decent both times. i will agree it is very "Chili'ish". We'll just have to disagree on the pizza at Pastime and the one time I got the roast beef it sucked. Galatoire's was very good the times I've been. I wouldn't rank it as good as the original, but it is certainly no worse than Roberto's and about the same price.

The only chains listed I thought are local. And for the record, I wouldn't put any in your T1 category.

I haven't really found a good mexican restaurant yet. When we're forced to choose, it's usually Ninfa's because it's closer, but Superior is about the same. LaCarreta isn't too bad, but for whatever reason my wife doesn't like them at all.

For pizza, I really get into the sauce. Not to say that Pastime's pizza doesn't taste good, but it just isn't good pizza if that makes any sense. The boudin pizza tastes pretty good if you're looking for something different.

I didn't remember Roberto's being as expensive as Galatoire's Bistro.

Have you tried La Mexicana?

I have two good friends from Panama and they've said it's easily the most authentic Mexican food they've had in Baton Rouge. I had a burrito with carne asade and it was really good.

Just scared to go back because the waitress was hitting on me in Spanish and my buddies are laughing at me and I have absolutely no idea what's going on :covri:

Oscar's Pizza and Ice Cream Joint over by Pennington on Perkins had really good pizza when I went in November. The ice cream was kinda meh, but overall probably my best pizza experience in Baton Rouge.

May have to try that since I live near it. Only problem is every time I pass by it's like 2AM and it sounds like a delicious combination at the time lol

LaCarreta was good for a while, but the last few times not so much. I've been tempted to try the mexican restaurant on Siegen next to the grocery, but I hate that road.

I'm more about the crust on pizza so we may just differ there.

Galatoires is a bit more than Roberto's, but I've been served cold food more than once at Roberto's and never at Galatoires plus you have to factor in the drive out to Sunshine.

Hole in the wall Mexican place that's really good and not expensive: Marina's.

It's attached to The Station.

Panamanians not equal to Mexicans.

go back. if she hits on you, just say "ay chica." I cheek-a. it'll be good enough.

I'm aware of this but they've been to Mexico plenty of times.

I guess I should mention that another good friend mine is Mexican and he said the same thing.

The waitress wasn't Mexican however, I believe my friends said she was Cuban.

Had a great meal celebrating our 11th anniversary at Mansur's. Hard to beat a great filet with lump crabmeat and a good bottle of vino.

Juban's > Mansur's, but it was still pretty good.

When I lived there and we'd go to the The City Club, I'd usually get the trout meuniere. The waiter would always ask, "would you like lump crabmeat on there for an additional $4?" When would the answer to that question ever be "no"?

and speaking of Juban's, we're having a Super Bowl party up here and wanted to serve the yankees and foreigners Louisiana food. I'm making muffalettas, having some hog's head cheese and cracklins sent up, mixing up sazeracs and serving Abita. My wife's making etouffée and wanted to make some gumbo. We always love Juban's duck and andouille gumbo. So she called last night, spoke to the chef and he gave her the recipe. :9:

I think I had a redfish version of "trout meuniere" at Juban's once. At least I think was Juban's. Outstanding. I can't get enough of the sauces they throw on food there.

Now I want some cracklins. I need to grab some on the way back from the office.

Thanks...

Bergeron's across the river - www.bergeronsboudin.com - has the best in the BRLA area that I could find. Just got off the phone with my dad and he's headed out there to get me those and some andouille.

I haven't had any cracklins there yet. I've only had cracklins from Ronnies.
