Report: Saints 1 of 9 teams scheduled to formally meet with Boise St. RB Ashton Jeanty at NFL Combine

First of several links to the stories about who teams are meeting with. Teams meet with all the expected first-round picks. It's part of the process.

RB is deep in this draft, deeper I'd say than both QB and WR combined. Must rebuild from the inside out in FA and the draft. The trenches on both sides of the ball need to be prioritized. Who we end up signing in FA will dictate the draft.

There. All my stances in just a few words! :giggle:

And agreed with Ellias up above me in that Jeanty makes most sense for a team with a better o-line than us, but no RB1. We have one in Kamara and we have a lot of untapped production in Miller, who was among those screwed over by DA, as we found out.

It would be nice to get him, but I see RB as a luxury when you look at the holes on our roster. We need a top tier receiver with a big body more than we need a RB. Either that or a TE/Guard. Defensively, we need help at Corner, Safety, LB & DT, & DE. The FA period will be telling to see what holes we fix before the draft. Way too hard to say what we will do until we see what moves they make prior.

Running Back is not a priority position with Kamara and dare I say Miller and you can find help at that position in the later rounds, we have to get an impact player on defense or offense in the form of a DE/Pass Rusher and WR with the #9 pick. (IMHO)
Right, it's not like reaching for a DE when there were better players available has ever gone disasterously wrong for us.

Doesn't mean anything. Saints will meet with over 300 people during their visit.

Plenty of teams meet with prospects they will never draft and vise versa.

Abdul Carter (won't be there, got it)
Jalon Walker
Mike Green

None of these guys would be considered a reach at #9.

Even Mykel Williams and Shemar Stewart (neither of whom I like) would be considered by most to be worthy of the #9 pick.

Mikel and Jalon I think would be reaches at 9. Mike Green has some character concerns that need to be taken into consideration. My real point though was why should we feel the need to pass on a clearly better talent based on position? Why is it always about filling a position on the roster than taking the better guy?

I was being a little facetious. There will be an edge guy available who would be worth the #9 pick. Likely Walker and/or Green. I'd take either before Jeanty. And if perchance, they're gone (along with Tet and Tyler Warren) I'm looking for a trade down. And if I couldn't find a trade partner I'd take the best OL available.
I’m not against trading down, especially if we can pick up an extra second-rounder

Do you think that Jeanty's draft position is greatly benefitted this year by the season that Barkley had? Maybe it gives some teams a reason to shift back to old school thought that it is the player and not the position.

Because unless we're talking about an HOF-caliber talent at RB in the mold of Adrian Peterson or Barry Sanders (and I don't think Jeanty is worthy of that label), I wouldn't take a RB in the top 10. It's not a good way to build a team. The trenches are more important.
