Saints Cap Moves: Derek Carr restructured, Erik McCoy restructured; J. Williams released; cap space is at -$8,543,537 (139 Viewers)

Aside from the financial ramifications, this is the other part people just fail to want to accept. Our coach, who has watched actual film and has a better idea than anyone how Carr’s game could translate, actually wants the player, and the player is not as bad as he’s characterized as.

Like what makes this player so god awful to where people are acting like they want to jump off a bridge behind this news? Like we just gave the worst QB in the history of the league a new guaranteed $50 million a year deal or something.
Because this team is in cap hell, isn’t going anywhere this year or next, because we don’t have talent, are aging, and don’t have the cap space to add impact players.

Chicken littles on social media going nuts over news they've already gone nuts over weeks ago. What a whiny fanbase we have become.

And if we didn’t do this restructure and had no operating room for free agency, they’d be whining about us not being able to sign anyone.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Yep. Our once knowledgeable and football savvy fan base has become as bad as the Falcons base.

You seem to not understand that getting rid of Carr has nothing to do with Carr.

It's all points to wanting organically rebuild the roster and go about it differently than last 3 seasons which all have ended in failure.

We are in a better place next year to eat $60 million in dead money than we are to eat $50 million in dead money this year (assuming Carr doesn't perform).

Everyone is gonna scream at Mickey, but there wasn't much of a choice here. This was the most realistic way to set up Carr's departure.

And even though it's not a popular position, Kellen Moore wanting a starting QB to work with is understandable.
Not really. The cap looks better at a glance, but we have 15 less players under contract in 2026 that we do in 2025 that'll need to be replaced next year and Carr's cap number just ballooned to $69 million to keep and $60m in dead money to cut. Many of those players that'll be gone are starters.

Eh…maybe that’s your case but there’s plenty of sentiment through others here and on social media that this is about absolutely despising Carr.

Your opinion/assessment believe it or not does not speak for or reflect all of Saints social media.

We literally made this move so that we CAN be aggressive in free agency as we said we plan to be, but sure continue speaking off the cuff with your emotions.

Yup, this restructuring was basically always gonna happen. Carr was gonna be the QB this year.

The cap will go up another ~$25 million next year, and we'll be able to designate post 6/1. Next year will indeed be far better to manage the dead money.
