Saints Cap Moves: Derek Carr restructured, Erik McCoy restructured; J. Williams released; cap space is at -$8,543,537 (91 Viewers)

I said in the cap thread that they likely tried to adjust Carr’s contract the way they did for Davis and Mathieu last year. Take a pay cut this year, but add guarantees next year to keep the money the same. Clearly, he didn’t see any need to help us, the same way he saw no need to help his former team.

Well, then let him walk. We are not winning a Super Bowl this year anyway. Rip the band aid off.

The saints are in a much better place to eat his hit next year with very likely a rookie QB contract starting next year.
They will have 35(after the draft and maybe small handful of signings) active contracts with probably only 60 million in cap space after they create cap space for this season.

We will definitely have a way worse roster situation next year.

Chicken littles on social media going nuts over news they've already gone nuts over weeks ago. What a whiny fanbase we have become.

And if we didn’t do this restructure and had no operating room for free agency, they’d be whining about us not being able to sign anyone.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I’ve stopped reading the comments on X. The posters on this forum are so much less whiney and way more knowledgeable.

On this site, when people take issue with something management does, they usually offer some sort of solution or alternative that might make sense. On X they just want to get the pitchforks out and complain without really understanding the situation. It seems like the only thing that would make them happy is benching Carr for Rattler, who he clearly outplayed last year. That makes no sense to me.

Great post.

It’s amazing how many people just don’t get this.
It was really the best move given the situation. We need space, and he helps us clear the most.

When we signed the deal, all those reports that it was only a two year, $70m deal were not realistic given how we manage things.

yeah, for what? To not compete this year as well.

Aside from the financial ramifications, this is the other part people just fail to want to accept. Our coach, who has watched actual film and has a better idea than anyone how Carr’s game could translate, actually wants the player, and the player is not as bad as he’s characterized as.

Like what makes this player so god awful to where people are acting like they want to jump off a bridge behind this news? Like we just gave the worst QB in the history of the league a new guaranteed $50 million a year deal or something.
