Saints expected to be very interested in former Packers/Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy [McCarthy will interview early next week] (136 Viewers)

Why is Loomis’ son a hinderance?

As the news hit that the Dallas Cowboys would not be bringing back head coach Mike McCarthy, many news outlets expected the New Orleans Saints to have immediate interest in the Super Bowl-winner. While the team is expected to meet with McCarthy early next week, NFL insider Josina Anderson reports the Saints are not expected to rush their process nor “elevate” him over their current options.

Interestingly, Anderson added that “Loomis’ son being a Cowboys employee was not the only cause for hesitation.” Alex Loomis has worked in the Dallas scouting department since 2009, having spent the previous nine years interning with the Saints.

Keep believing that! If yall think that Haslett actually told McCarthy to not put Delhomme in your crazy! If McCarthy would have told Haslett that he wanted to start Delhomme then Haslett would not have went against him. That quote is just a HC taking the heat for his OC that’s all.

Are you playing conspiracy theorist on a move that was or wasnt made 2 decades ago, when the primary person in the story admitted it was his call? WHAT.

Find me an OC that tells a HC who he is starting at QB, and Ill find you a HC that wont be a HC long.

Comparing Reid and Mccarthy is silly because Mahomes is the difference here and if Reid didnt have Mahomes then nobody would even be talking about Reid.

If you tell me that we get Mahomes and Mccarthy everyone would be singing super bowl songs.

But the reality is Mccarthy would be inheriting a worse roster and to be frank front office than what he had in Dallas with the Saints.

The general consensus among media, even Saints fans laughed at the cowboys over the last few years because they underachieved in the playoffs. Now we want the guy that was the leader in that. The Cowboys had way more talent during Mccarthys regime than to just win 1 playoff games in 4 attempts.

Mccarthy since 2017 is 1-3 in the playoffs. You have to back 8 years before you see any significant success Mccarthy has had in the playoffs.
No it's not silly because Reid before Mahomes is almost EXACTLY the same as McCarthy except Reid did not win a SB. It's a clear cutoff point. Before Mahomes /after Mahomes. Before Mahomes Reid had won only 1 playoff game in 5 yrs even worse than McCarthy. If Reid had been fired in 2016 would people have said he's a retread and can't win in the playoffs like they are saying about McCarthy? How about Tomlin?? he has not won a playoff game in the last 5 or 6 tries but people would take him in a sec.

Sounds like a good coordinator. What about that will make him a good head coach?
From the reports I've read the players love him. And he has the ability to joke around and then get serious and firm when needed. He's in my top 5 of candidates

Again, people love to take away the context and point to numbers. The Chiefs consistently won when it mattered. The Cowboys rarely did. The Cowboys during that time commonly lost to playoff teams and beat teams who couldn't make the playoffs. I'm not going to pretend thats good, and I haven't any desire to settle for a coach who can only win during the season as long as they're not playing against playoff teams. This is exactly why McCarthy was fired, again.
You do know that he was NOT fired , in fact he walked away from the table

It still isn’t true that Loomis said Allen was “the next Chuck Noll.” He was citing examples of when patience paid off. It’s understood that he and the team had confidence in Allen. It didn’t work out and the team is moving on.
Yeah, that's EXACTLY what I got out of that statement

And you could argue, whatever his faults, DA might have been more successful had the team not been repeatedly crushed by key injuries. Perhaps those injuries were 'self-inflicted' but that's difficult to really establish without any doubt.

But he was given time, and it didn't work and I think that was his final chance as HC (probably).
I agree, I've never been a big DA fan he had some issues. But even with hin as HC if we would have been mostly healthy this yr I feel we would have won the NFCS. No other team in the last 10-15 yrs was decimated by injuries like he were. The 1st 2 games were an indication of what were were capable of. Were we going to score 40+ pts a game? Probably not but KK had the offense on track. But people don't look beneath the surface , they only see the cover of the book

People are not considering the circumstances of the Cowboys Playoff losses. None of them were a result of "bad coaching." in 2023 when they lost to the Packers, they had some serious injuries, including Trevon Diggs who did not play and Cooks played gimpy and couldn't run full speed. Then Pollard lost a fumble in the second quarter, and on the next possession (I think) Dak thru a pick 6. McCarthy did not let the team roll over and die. They battled back from a 27-0 deficit to a final score of 48-32.

The 2022 Cowboys playoff loss was a tight well-played game against the 49ers. Pollard broke his Fibula in the first half and because of Jerry Jones, Jerry jonesing, the cowboys were forced to rely on a washed-up Ezekiel Elliot for their run game, handicapping what the offense could do.

The 2021 Cowboys loss to the 49ers was an epic battle. They lost Micah Parson in the first quarter with a concussion. The cowboys got jobbed when the refs took too long to spot the ball and the clock ran out before they could spike it, they were around San Frans 20 and should have had a chance to win the game. Final Score 23-17.

It's not like McCarthy's teams are not showing up in the playoffs. The dude has 11 post season wins. Andy Reid had 16 post season losses, Belichick 13, Mike Tomlin 11, and Sean Payton 10.

McCarthy is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over what we have had since Payton left. I know he has "Cowboys stink" on him, so it's easy to hate, but the notion that he can't build teams and can't win is nonsensical.
A prime example of looking beneath the surface. People just see a playoff loss and not WHY . It's because people can be lazy AND there are too many wannabe Youtube so-called experts on the internet that people think " Hey he's got his own show, he must know what he's talking about"

He is not coming to the Saints with the same talent he had in Dallas so he won't just come in here and win 12 games like people are saying he will do. This is not a 12 win team currently.
I haven’t read a post stating that McCarthy will come in and win 12 games. He or any other coach selected will likely have a rough first season. The majority of us know that. But that won’t stop the malcontents from harping about it all season because it wasn’t their guy. McCarthy is simply the most proven commodity and though not everyone’s top choice, he’s a solid choice.

SWJJ, this hopefully will be my last post for some time. I will let others weight in. But these are my ultimate questions with McCarthy. Why do those in Green Bay believe the Packers were right in letting him go and are happy with that decision?
Are you talking about fans or management? Fans as a whole never know as much as they think they know. A lot of fans were glad that the Chargers chose Rivers over Brees, just as one example.

Why do most in Dallas--I suspect--believe the Cowboys needed to move on from McCarthy?
Again, are you talking about fans or management? Cowboys fans are not only certain they are the best team every year, but they also feel strongly entitled to it. They turn on any coach who doesn't win them a Super Bowl every other year.

Regarding the first question, I believe the folks in Wisconsin are thrilled that McCarthy left and believe that LaFleur is a better coach.
LaFleur can be a better coach while at the same time McCarthy is a good coach. McCarthy doesn't have to be bad for LaFleur to be better just like Payton doesn't have to be bad for Reid to be better.

I have a friend in Green Bay who knows more about the history of the team than nearly anyone alive and has contacts in the building, so I can ask and provide a detailed account of why the Packers moved on from McCarthy.
That's just hearsay to me and I personally don't give it any more credibility than any other rumor. There's probably some truth to what you heard they heard from someone else, but there's no doubt every person in the chain is going to subjectively hear and repeat what they heard. It's not intentional, it's the telephone game.

Aren't you one of the people who would take Payton back and wanted Loomis and DA gone, because results speak for themselves and they speak the loudest? McCarthy has the same results over a long period of time as Payton and a lot of other really good coaches in NFL history. That speaks for itself and speaks the loudest.

McCarthy may not be the best coach for the Saints, but McCarthy is objectively a good and successful coach.

Yep. One of several reasons I prefer an offensive coach in today’s game. I also just feel the game is better managed when you have an offensive guy viewing everything in the game from an offensive perspective.
I think just about everyone would prefer an offensive HC. But it's more than that. Everything that I have seen from reports and videos tells me that Glen has the personality, the temperament , the attention to detail and the accountability to be a very good HC. But he not an O guy. I have not seen that from any of the offensive HC candidates or at least it does not jump out at me. If we hire Glenn and he either stays with KK and the offensive staff or he hires a great OC and O staff and we have great success on offense and as a team.

Then that OC leaves in 2-3 yrs if Glenn does not have his replacement already in mind then we hire the wrong HC. Bowels had Canales and he did well and left. He hires Coen and Coen got more results with less than Canales did. If we hire the RIGHT HC and he's a D guy and he hires a great OC and they leave. He knows what he wants and will find another good OC

I much rather McCarthy or Joe Brady(OC playcaller) over Glenn. Just like Underhill said, it is much easier to find DC's than it is OC's who will get poached when they do a good job. If they do go with Glenn, the moment the OC looks good with this roster, he's getting a bunch of HC interviews in the next cycle and do you really wanna go thru that drama?
Was just thinking about the fact that since Loomis has been with the Saints, their head coach hires have been defense, offense and then defense. That's Haslett, Payton and then DA. Hopefully, Loomis sees that most of their long term success and stability came with an offensive head coach and they go offense again.

Hopefully fans will see that the most success the Saints had with a defensive head coach was when McCarthy was the OC.
