Looks like it. This is going to be a really important hire since the matchup zone/pattern matching coverage with a 2 high shell is going to be a fairly new concept for our secondary. I'm sure we have used similar things from time to time with DA, but we played a lot of man to man and often with single high. This is going to be a big change that is going to need to be taught well by the DB coach. Also, IIRC, one of the biggest issues the Staley had with the Charges was with the coverage so hopefully Joseph is ready for the step up to the NFL.

I'm no expert in defensive formations, but this seems like a pretty drastic change and that we might not have the personnel to run it perfectly right away. The Saints appear to be a team in transition and not one looking to run it back the same as last year but with different coaches.

Important to note that the Fangio defense doesn’t necessarily play in a two-high shell, the signature of his defense is to be in one pre-snap. The safety that rotates down for cover 1 or cover 3 has the advantage of playing from depth and seeing the play develop in front of them, and that puts them in a better position to disrupt a lot of dig routes and crossing routes that have been a headache for our defense in recent years.

It’s also advantageous against teams that want to run a lot of play action, because the QB will see one thing pre-snap and then see something completely different when he turns his eyes back downfield.

Strangely, Kool-Aid might be the perfect fit for this scheme. Apparently Saban's scheme at Alabama was fairly similar. Generally their DBs played zone, but once a receiver made a cut they switched to man. I think it's similar to the pattern matching that Staley likes to play. I'm not sure about Alontae Taylor on the outside in this scheme. Although, I think he probably is a better fit in the slot overall and especially in this scheme where you need a slot that can blitz and come up to play the run to add guys to the light 6 man box that Staley tends to use. So, I do think we will need another outside CB. Not sure if Adebo as a free agent is a fit or not.

At safety Stayley's safeties are interchangeable but they both need to be able to crash the line in run support and play deep. Mathieu is old but I think he can still do both of those at a decent level. His main issues come when he has to cover on his own is space. Not sure we have any other Safeties that can really play that scheme (Harris can crash the box but I'm not sure he can play deep). Howden just never clicked last year but maybe a new staff and scheme will help him. But we needed some young Safeties anyway.

I also expect that because it will be new, we are going to see some coverage breakdowns while the DBs learn their assignment in different situations.

Yeah, I should have been more clear, it's a two high shell look but it often involves one Safety or the other crashing the box just before the snap to put another guy in the box for run support. The entire scheme is an advantage in confusing the QB, against play action, and against running QBs since the DBs generally have their eyes toward the QB instead of on a guy in man coverage down field. The moving Safeties also probably make RPOs less effective since they may not be getting the look they thought they were getting. All this is why the scheme has been so effective against the modern versions of the McVay/Shanahan system and running QB. Combine that with the 1 1/2 gap on the DL and you theoretically have an answer for any offense if executed properly.

I was always a fan of showing two high and then shifting around/at the point of the snap. It requires DBs able to athletically get to their true responsibility, as well as process what they're seeing on the way.

Yes, Terry Joseph is a local native. Cousin to Mickey and Vance. Terry was class of '92 and played baseball at Shaw as well as WR on the football Eagles. Mickey and then Vance (both a smidge older than Terry) were QBs on what was quite the prolific veer-option offense for the Eagles back then.
