Saints planned to interview Mike McCarthy; McCarthy didn’t garner enough interest from Saints and will take a year off (3 Viewers)

McCarthy is a good coach and is easily the safest bet out of the coaches we’ve requested an interview with so far. If we do hire him, I’m not going to complain.

That being said, as others have pointed out, the only question is whether it makes sense given our current situation.

Not a direction I'd be happy about. His teams have not been great in the playoffs in Dallas.

He's not my top pick either, but this is a team that just needs to get back to being a playoff team at this point. And, while Dallas has struggled in the playoffs under McCarty, it's not like he hasn't previously won in the playoffs and the most important thing is getting to the playoffs, followed by getting to the playoffs with the best record possible. Once you are in the playoffs, a lot of luck is involved in winning into the Super Bowl.

I also am not a really huge fan of any of the HC candidates this year. Johnson is the best but none of the young OCs seem to clearly be the leaders a HC needs to be. The best leaders are Vrable, who is gone, Glenn, and Rizzi. None of those guys are offensive coaches which bring issues finding a new OC every year or every other year. But, in the end, the best pick is still probably Glenn despite the OC problem.

So, maybe McCarty is a guy who build the team for 4 or 5 years, including some playoff appearances, before you move onto a young coach who will inherit a much better roster and cap situation?

He's the Gruden option without all the baggage and with a much better winning percentage as a HC.

Remember, Mike McCarthy already has history with the Saints as OC under Jim Haslett, I believe. He was also in the running for HC when Payton was interviewed. McCarthy took GB and Payton took NO instead of heading out to interview with the Raiders. The rest, as they say, is history.

He was able to get something out of Aaron Brooks for a short little while there, yes. But overall, he'd have to allay fans' fears of him being too much of a retread. I'm still favoring the young-and-hungry formula, as Payton once was and how Glenn and Brady appear to be now.

Still so many moving pieces in this whole thing, including Kubiak.

Another point about lack of deep runs in Dallas, The GM in Dallas (Jerry Jones) absolutely does not value the input of his Head Coaches when it comes to personnel. I think McCarthy could do a lot better with a GM that would support him and work with him on personnel than Jerry does.

The last time the Saints filled the HC position with a coach from Dallas it worked out really well for the Saints.

Can it happen twice? Only one way to find out.

The other offensive coaches are so young. Glenn looks like a good coach but we need offense.

Payton interviewed with the raiders the year before but didn’t take the job. He talked about it in his book. Al Davis had his secretary bring in McDonald’s

McCarthy is a good coach. His problem in GB was Rodgers becoming a prima donna. You see that now with him with the Jets. McCarthy’s problem in Dallas, as has been every coach’s problem, is Jerry Jones. I think in NO, McCarthy could get the most out of his players like Payton did because Gayle isn’t a meddlesome owner. There are also no prima donnas on the team.

He's not a bad coach or anything. He's pretty good with the players and scheme is solid enough.
Still, he's not the guy I would want when we are heading towards a total rebuild...that is the danger of Loomis making this hire and still trying to be within a 'win now' window. We all saw what a house of cards this roster was--and it's only getting older and more stagnant with aging veterans that we are forced into keeping or re-structuring. It's time for a younger HC to lead and build while we take our medicine for a few years.
