Saints planned to interview Mike McCarthy; McCarthy didn’t garner enough interest from Saints and will take a year off (7 Viewers)

Gimme a potential quick flame out over known mid-ness

I'm not sure that a career .608 winning percentage and a Super Bowl win is mid. If it is then Payton is probably mid too since he only has one Super Bowl win and his career winning percentage is only slightly better at .618.

That part I do agree with...which is why we are not as bad of a destination for a coach as reported...
The larger problem is can Loomis really survive what is about to become some very lean years?
Whomever eventually fills the power vacuum will want to bring in their own hire--whether it's 1, 2 or 3 years from now...

If McCarty is hired and wins, Loomis will stay as long as he wants but will likely retire on his own terms within the next 3 to 5 years.

I would NOT be excited with this move. McCarthy egregiously misused Aaron Jones when he was with GB and I have struggled to think he is all that great since. --- but if we go that route, I am hoping to be proven wrong.

If you put Payton and McCarthy's careers side by side its eerily similar. I remember looking at that when people were suggesting that Jones would go after Payton when he left the Saints. I thought why would he do that when he basically had the same thing in McCarthy.

McCarthy is a good coach. His problem in GB was Rodgers becoming a prima donna. You see that now with him with the Jets. McCarthy’s problem in Dallas, as has been every coach’s problem, is Jerry Jones. I think in NO, McCarthy could get the most out of his players like Payton did because Gayle isn’t a meddlesome owner. There are also no prima donnas on the team.
We surely agree on that one.

Since McCarthy is from Pittsburgh PA, his first choice might be Chicago.

Like Vrabel, we may not have a real shot at hiring him!

I could live with him hired here because of his experience. But I think it would be a lazy hire. And I think Mike's a paycheck-collecting retread who does not move the needle much one way or the other.

Stephen and Will took over the draft and player personnel in Dallas about 7 years ago and they built up the roster. I doubt McCarthy had more than an input role.

What did McCarthy do with the talent?

Herpa derpa'd in the playoffs on both sides of the ball. Had zero control of Dak no matter the preparation.

Granted, Mike does consistently oversay the word 'footbull' during a media appearance. And he does look like a human po-boy sandwich.

But he's outdated, like Loomis. Just as Loomis keeps a Drew Brees poster above his bed, Mike probably keeps a discount doublecheck Aaron poster above his.

I think there was an exclusive negotiating window after contract expiration that was written into his contract.
I get the concept but I just don’t understand the difference between “your contract expires on the 1st but we have exclusive negotiating rights until the 10th” and “your contract expires on the 10th”

I know a lot of people disagree, but I would not be angry at a Mike McCarthy hire. He has the 3rd most wins with 174 wins (DA had 26) of any active head coach and a .608 winning percentage (DA had .329). He's coached a Super Bowl winning team and knows what that looks like and what it takes to get there. Maybe he's not the best coach in the world, but the best coaches in the world already have jobs. And he just showed enough confidence in himself to not let Jerry Jones bully him into accepting a 1 year deal.
