Saints signed QB Nathan Peterman (1 Viewer)

Normally, we'll sign a guy who was decent elsewhere and he plays like dog poop for us (Brees not included). This time, apparently, we're trying to find a gem by hiring a guy who's already lousy.

Reverse psychology, I guess

If THAT? They should sign ME~! I could really use the money and at my age I'm sure to suck as badly as whoever this guy is~! Come on Coach! Give me a tryout~!

Peterman is Carr's Chase Daniel - no fans will expect, or want, Peterman to start over Carr (unlike Winston).

Easily the worst signing of the offseason thus far, especially when your starting QB has been injured off and on since 2020.

The level of melt in this thread over a guy that won’t even make the final 53 is rather astounding 🤣🤣
So it would be funny if, in the beginning of free agency, instead of targeting actual football players, they filled the roster with players that will not make the final 53. They made him a priority by targeting him so early.

There have been players signed by nearly every team so far in free agency that won’t make the 53 man roster dude.

Dude, how many teams with a need for backup QB targeted someone like Peterman very early in free agency? He is a camp arm type at best. Those are not usually targeted so early in free agency. Maybe they have a ton of confidence in Haener to up his game to be a reliable backup and only need a camp arm. Just odd time to target one.

This is just a not subtle indication that Haener is the #2 QB. I don't really see where it matters if the sign Peterman now or if they wait a few weeks. He's the #3 QB and he's here to help install the offense and be an arm in mini-camps and OTAs. Could they have gotten a better QB? Absolutely, but he's not the #2 and they were clearly never going to spend serious money on a #2 QB , much less a #3 QB this year. It doesn't really matter when they signed him. It didn't stop them from signing other players.

It's clear the strategy this year is cost cutting and hoping to hit on some low level free agents (not Peterman) or a guy like Young who has huge upside, but might come fairly cheap at a position of extreme need. I'm not a huge fan of the strategy in that I think they should have been a bit more aggressive and signed more guys with the potential of Willie Gay, but if people want the cap under control, this is how you get the cap under control.

I'm okay with it, just like I was okay with the pushing money to the future strategy, because all strategies depend on talent evaluation in the draft and free agency anyway. That, IMO, needs to be improved and I think they need to stop trading away draft picks and find a way to get more draft picks.

But, I am fine with the #2 QB strategy being Haener is #2. They gave up picks to move up to get him and used a 4th on him. It's time to see if he can play and if he can't, you move on to take another shot at a young QB. And, if Carr goes down this team isn't winning anything anyway so I would rather see a young QB get a shot. He either succeeds and solves our QB issues for several years or he fails and we get better draft picks next year.

Wolford, Stick and Huntley have all been signed in recent days.

None of them are anything more than a 3rd QB AT BEST.

Teams tend to get QB’s in pretty early in the off season to help other guys learn the system and have arms to throw in minicamps and OTA’s.

I think we are trimming to a degree, being less reckless, but I must also remind that the NFL off-season isn't just one week. There are many free agents out there that have themselves currently priced-out, and those prices should start leveling off soon, and we also have the trade market to work with, draft day player trades, post-draft cuts, ACTUAL June 1st cuts that'll be made available, etc.

I hear you. There are no doubt guys out there that none of us know about that can/will be good players. I mean, none of us, or at least very few, knew who Yiadom and Amadi were last year but we are crying because they left a year later. It's possible they will find more guys like that this year.

And, I'm fine if that is the strategy. I've never thought that spending big in free agency was the answer. I believe in building through the draft and filling holes in free agency with cheap players with upside. I'm admittedly just impatient for things to get moving. I'd feel a lot better with how things are going if we had a DE and OT in free agency. But, there is still time to get Young and Peat.
